Miami is reportedly desperate to acquire Klay Thompson but wants to avoid surrendering assets in a trade. While the Heat are waiting for a possible contract buyout, the Mavericks currently prefer a trade. Thompson's priority remains joining a championship contender for the final stage of his career.
The Miami Heat appear to be one of the most determined teams pursuing Klay Thompson, although the way they want to acquire the veteran guard remains a major obstacle.
Speaking on the DLSS Mavs podcast, NBA insider Marc Stein said Dallas' position on Thompson has not changed, with the Mavericks still preferring to find a trade rather than negotiate a contract buyout.
"To this point the Mavs position has not changed," Stein said. "They would prefer to trade him."
Miami, however, is reportedly hoping to avoid surrendering assets for the 36-year-old and instead wants Thompson to eventually become available on the open market.
"All we know is, Miami is desperate for Klay Thompson, but they want to sign him as a free agent," Stein said. "They would not be the only team interested."
Heat waiting for potential Thompson buyout
The situation creates a clear disconnect between the two sides. Dallas wants to receive something in return for Thompson, while Miami's preferred route would require the Mavericks to buy out the final year of his contract.
The Heat have already been reluctant to sacrifice young talent in a potential deal. Previous reporting indicated Miami was unwilling to include Nikola Jovic in trade discussions involving Thompson, making a straightforward agreement with Dallas difficult.
A buyout would allow the Heat to pursue Thompson without giving up Jovic or other rotation pieces, but Stein's latest comments suggest Dallas is still not prepared to take that route.
Thompson has also made his priorities clear as he approaches the final stage of his career, saying recently that his main goal is to play for a team capable of making a deep playoff run and competing for another championship.
Miami appears eager to offer him that opportunity. The question is whether the Heat will eventually have to meet Dallas' trade demands or wait and hope the Mavericks change their stance.
