John Beilein is joining the Orlando Magic as a Senior Coaching Consultant under new head coach Sean Sweeney.
The decorated former collegiate coach announced that Sweeney personally reached out to him to join the franchise in a statement.
“Sean has a brilliant future as an NBA head coach, and I’m honored he asked me to serve him and the Magic in this capacity,” Beilein wrote. “I look forward to supporting the coaching staff and contributing any way I can to the organization’s continued growth and success.”
John Beilein joins Orlando Magic
Joining the Orlando Magic would be the return of John Beilein to the NBA since becoming the Detroit Pistons' senior advisor in 2021-22 and having a brief head coaching tenure for the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2019-20.
One of the greatest coaches in college history, Beilein is the winningest coach in University of Michigan history, finishing his 12-year run with a 278-150 record. He led the Wolverines to two NCAA National Championship Game appearances (2013 and 2018).
Beilein is one of the few coaches to lead four different Division I schools — Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia, and Michigan — to the NCAA Tournament. He compiled an impressive 829-468 overall record across all collegiate levels, including 754 wins at the NCAA level.
With the entry of Sean Sweeney as the franchise's newest head coach, Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and the Magic are one of the most anticipated teams to watch next season.
Orlando dismissed Jamahl Mosley in his head coaching spot after the team blew its 3-1 deficit against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in the opening round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
