The transfer saga involving Zion Suzuki, Emiliano Martinez and Guglielmo Vicario has created a fascinating goalkeeping domino effect across some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Aston Villa’s move for Suzuki, first reported by David Ornstein, has thrown Martinez’s future into doubt, while Juventus have switched their attention to Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Vicario, who has returned to Serie A on loan.
The chain of events has left all three goalkeepers facing significant changes to their futures, with the decisions of one club having a direct impact on the others.

Zion Suzuki Set to Replace Martinez
Aston Villa are closing in on a deal worth around £30 million for Zion Suzuki, who is expected to become Unai Emery’s new first-choice goalkeeper.
The Japan international has been one of Villa’s leading targets as they prepare for life after Martinez, despite the Argentine still having three years remaining on his contract.
Suzuki joined Parma from Urawa Red Diamonds in 2024 and has made 59 appearances for the Italian club. The 23-year-old also started all four of Japan’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Villa have had to fend off competition from several interested clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, to secure the goalkeeper’s signature.
His impending arrival means Villa appear to view Suzuki as their long-term number one, potentially bringing an end to the Argentine’s hugely successful spell at the club.
What Happens to Martinez?
Martinez has been one of the most important players at Villa Park since joining from Arsenal for £17 million in 2020.
The 33-year-old has made 256 appearances for the club and played a big role in their Europa League triumph last season, ending Villa’s 30-year wait for a major trophy.
He has also established himself among the world’s elite goalkeepers, winning the Yashin Trophy twice and helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup before reaching another final in 2026.

Martinez is one of the club’s highest earners, while Villa have been required to generate significant funds through player sales as they continue to navigate Premier League and UEFA financial regulations.
A move to Juventus had appeared to provide the obvious solution. However, the Italian giants could not agree a fee with Villa, with the Premier League club reportedly holding out for closer to £10 million after rejecting an offer in the region of £8.5 million.
The proposed move subsequently collapsed, leaving Martinez in an unusual position. Villa have signed his potential successor, while Juventus have already moved on to another goalkeeper.
Juventus Switch Targets
Juventus’ interest in Martinez has now been replaced by a move for Vicario. The Italian goalkeeper has joined the Serie A giants from Tottenham on an initial season-long loan, with an £8.6 million option to buy.
The move sees a return to Italy for Vicario, who joined Spurs from Empoli for £17.2 million in 2023 and went on to make 117 appearances for the club.
His departure has also been made possible by the emergence of Antonin Kinsky. The Czech goalkeeper took over from Vicario during Roberto De Zerbi’s seven-game spell in charge at the end of last season and produced a series of important performances as Spurs secured their Premier League survival.

De Zerbi subsequently confirmed Kinsky would remain first choice, while Tottenham brought in Martin Dubravka to provide competition and cover.
That left Vicario facing an uncertain future, with Juventus now providing the opportunity for him to return to his homeland. The Italian club’s decision to pursue Vicario also effectively removes one of the most likely destinations for Martinez.
Three Goalkeepers, Three Different Futures
The goalkeeping transfer saga has left Zion Suzuki on the verge of a major Premier League move, Vicario heading back to Serie A and Martinez facing an increasingly uncertain future.
For Villa and Juventus, their succession plans now appear clear, while Tottenham have also resolved their goalkeeping hierarchy with Kinsky taking over as first choice.
Martinez is the remaining piece of the puzzle, with Villa’s decision to sign Suzuki leaving his next move as one of the more intriguing unresolved questions of the transfer window.
