Toyota teams installing upgraded engines at Ipswich

Homologation team Walkinshaw TWG had targeted Ipswich to debut its ‘B-spec’ engine aimed at solving the reliability woes experienced to date.
The ‘B-spec’ features revised camshafts designed to take load off the valvetrain of the 5.2-litre 2UR-GSE that was developed in conjunction with Swindon Powertrains.
Walkinshaw has been in a race against time to get upgraded powerplants built in Melbourne and signed off by Supercars’ Brisbane engine shop.
Speedcafe understands that four B-spec engines have been completed – double that originally forecast by the team.
Three are understood to currently be at the circuit on Thursday afternoon with the fourth soon to be on its way.

The four engines will be allocated to Walkinshaw TWG pair Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood, and BJR’s leading drivers Andre Heimgartner and Cam Hill.
That will leave Macauley Jones as the only Toyota driver still on the A-specification for Ipswich.
Walkinshaw TWG completed its first B-spec engine late last month, running it at a ride day following the Perth Super440 and during a dedicated test at The Bend.
While the upgrade is primarily about reliability, Walkinshaw team principal Carl Faux told Speedcafe it should also smooth the engine’s torque curve.
“Certainly, we have heard a lot about this hole in our torque curve,” Faux said. “I’m not going to lie and say that we’ve completely filled that, but we’re certainly over halfway there.”
