David Ornstein claims Man Utd are set to complete £65m swoop for Newcastle United target

Newcastle United transfers: Manchester United are now pushing ahead to sign a player recently linked with Newcastle.

Manchester United are reportedly ‘closing on a deal’ for a Premier League midfielder linked with a move to Newcastle United over the last fortnight.

The Magpies have already added to their options in midfield with the additions of Ajax youngster Sean Steur and Monaco’s Aladji Bamba - but reports have suggested they have now turned their attention towards securing a more experienced option in the middle of the park after concluding a deal for Benfica full-back Amar Dedic on Tuesday morning.

Speaking on Saturday as the Dedic deal progressed, new Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle addressed United’s attempts to add more new faces to his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

He said: "As I mentioned in the press conference previously, and also in interviews, that club knows exactly the needs, and this is here is not the right place to talk about the positions and names. "Everyone is involved in the club, in the management and there will be some changes (to the squad)for sure. It's important that there will be something done in the transfer market. I think everyone is aligned on that."

Newcastle have been linked with the likes of Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha over the last week and there were reports suggesting Marseille star Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg rejected a move to St James Park after the Magpies made a move for his services earlier this month. Tuesday brought speculation of an ambitious move for Manchester City star Nico Gonzalez and there have been some suggestions Newcastle retain an interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. However, any move for the latter appears to now be off the table after Manchester United held what were described as ‘amicable talks’ with the Seagulls and those discussions are ongoing as the two clubs look to agree a fee.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein posted an update on X, stating: “Manchester United closing in on deal to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion. Manchester United offer for 22yo Cameroon midfielder ~£60+5m; below Brighton and Hove Albion valuation but amicable talks continue as all parties work to reach agreement.”
