Reports in Spain have claimed Newcastle United are close to signing the Barcelona teenager.
Guille Fernandez is not close to joining Newcastle United from Barcelona, contrary to reports in Spain.
Albert Fernandez, a presenter for Spanish TV station GOL, claimed on X that the 18-year-old midfielder is ‘close to Newcastle’, with Barcelona willing to negotiate a deal that includes a buy-back clause.
The same applied to Guille’s cousin Toni, who is said to be attracting interest from Bayer Leverkusen and three other unnamed clubs.
“FC Barcelona is currently working on the transfers of young players while not entirely losing the option to buy them back,” Fernandez wrote, “This is the case with the Fernández cousins.
“Right now, Guille is close to Newcastle and Toni to Bayer Leverkusen. Although there are other teams bidding.”
Guille Fernandez not close to joining Newcastle United
The Spain under-19s international is yet to play for Barcelona’s first team competitively, though he did feature for Hansi Flick’s side in pre-season last year before an ankle injury halted his progress.
Fernandez has been a regular for Barcelona B in recent seasons, but suggestions that he is close to making the jump to the Premier League are understood to come as news to Newcastle.
Newcastle United agree Ousmane Diabate signing
The Magpies are, however, close to securing a move for 18-year-old midfielder Ousmane Diabate from Turkish side Genclerbirligi.
However, unlike the arrivals of young midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba, Diabate is expected to re-join Genclerbirligi on loan once his switch to St James’ Park is confirmed.
