Fabrizio Romano issues update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez.
Nico Gonzalez is keen to stay at Manchester City amid interest from Newcastle United.
Newcastle are in the market for an experienced midfielder following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, and have identified Gonzalez as a leading target.
The 24-year-old has struggled for regular starts since his £50million arrival from Porto in January 2025, starting just two of Man City’s final 17 Premier League matches last season.
Man City are open to selling the Argentina international to the Magpies, but the player believes he can still be an important player at the Etihad Stadium following Rodri’s £65million move to Barcelona.
Fabrizio Romano issues Nico Gonzalez update
Transfer influencer Fabrizio Romano said on YouTube: “My understanding is that Manchester City are quite open to doing business with Newcastle United about Nico Gonzalez.
“So for Man City, despite being short in midfield, Man City are not closing the door on the exit of Nico Gonzalez. It has to be the right proposal, but Man City are not closing doors to Newcastle.
“The point here is what the player wants to do because from what I'm told, the player is still convinced he can be an important player at Man City and he can give his best to Manchester City now with this midfield re-shape.
“At the moment, the point is on the player’s side. City could be open to letting him go for the right money but at the moment with Nico, he's convinced he can do more at Manchester City.
“So let's see what's going to happen also with this for Newcastle in terms of new midfielder.”
Newcastle United’s search for an experienced midfielder
Newcastle have signed 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba from Ajax and Monaco, respectively, but manager Matthias Jaissle is desperate to bring in a proven and experienced head to complement his young squad.
The Magpies were in talks to sign former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but a move broke down over personal terms. Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha, formerly of Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, has also been a target but he is keen on a return to Portugal with Benfica.
Jaissle’s side kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on Sunday and would need to register any potential new signing before 12pm on Friday for them to be eligible to feature.
