Manchester United legend Roy Keane has made a surprise prediction for the star he believes could claim the Player of the Season award in the upcoming campaign.
The former United captain surprisingly backed Bruno Fernandes.
He said (via The Overlap): “I will go with Bruno Fernandes.
“He is a brilliant player. I think if United are decent at the back, he can produce some magic.”
Fernandes was sensational throughout the 2025-26 campaign, rewriting the Premier League record books with the most assists ever recorded in a single season.
The Portuguese playmaker delivered an astonishing 21 assists while also finding the net nine times.
His outstanding campaign earned him the official Premier League Player of the Season award as well as a record fifth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year prize.
Fernandes also collected the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award and United’s Players’ Player of the Year honour.
While Fernandes is an obvious contender, endorsement from Keane is particularly intriguing given the criticism he has directed at the United captain in the past.
The 55-year-old previously claimed Fernandes chose to pass when he should have taken the responsibility himself during United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.
However, that criticism was completely misplaced, as Fernandes had actually said the exact opposite in his post-match interview.
The United captain directly challenged Keane, effectively accusing the club legend of misrepresenting what he had said.
The disagreement eventually cooled down after Keane revealed that the pair had spoken privately and put the issue to bed.
United supporters will hope Keane’s latest prediction proves true and Fernandes produces another spectacular campaign.
If the captain can replicate his extraordinary creative numbers while adding more goals, he could once again find himself at the heart of the Player of the Season race.
However, the responsibility cannot rest solely on Fernandes. Other United stars need to step up and deliver in their respective roles if the club are to challenge for major honours.
