With not much time left in the summer transfer window, [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/20/here-we-go-fabrizio-romano-newcastle-united-transfer-miss/) still have a lot of work to do on their squad. If the pre-season results are anything to go by, this is a team that is nowhere near the mark at this moment. That is understandable in many ways, considering the amount of talent that has left through the St James’ Park exit.
Unfortunately, not enough has arrived in return. At least not players who are ready to make any impact from day one, which is what the Magpies need when it comes to replacing Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
One player Newcastle United have been linked with in recent days, whose signing would excite the fans, is Nico Gonzalez. The midfielder has not been able to establish himself as a starter for Manchester City.
Despite the departure of Rodri, it has been suggested that Man City are also open to the exit of Gonzalez. And there is a positive update coming out on the entire situation.
According to [Christian Vaquero](https://x.com/ChristianVaq0/status/2090423615602971060), the first conversations between Newcastle United, Manchester City and Gonzalez have been very positive.
Of course, Newcastle United will know the importance of convincing a player to join. They have failed to do so time and again in this summer transfer window so far.
This has happened with Victor Munoz, Johan Manzambi, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joao Palhinha already. And those are the stories that have come out in the media.
It is very possible that there are plenty of others that have not worked out behind the scenes but have never come out in the media. So, early talks regarding a move for Gonzalez being positive is a step in the right direction.
There are many who would question how much of a game-changer signing Gonzalez would be. At the end of the day, he has not made enough of an impact at Man City.
Then again, just because a player does not meet expectations at Man City does not mean he can’t succeed at a number of other Premier League clubs.
That could be the case with someone like Gonzalez as well. He clearly has the talent needed to perform at this level. He just needs the right opportunity.
Newcastle United might just represent that for Gonzalez. One thing is for sure, if signed, he would be a nailed-on starter from day one for the Magpies.
