Ex-Sunderland talent Eliezer Mayenda has been speaking to the media after his transfer to Stade Rennais.
Former Sunderland striker Eliezer Mayenda has reflected fondly on the “learning experience” that his time on Wearside afforded him.
The popular Spaniard departed the Stadium of Light earlier this summer, joining French outfit Stade Rennais in a big money move. Since then, he has returned to the North East for a preseason friendly with his new club, receiving a warm welcome from home supporters
And in a fresh interview with continental outlet Marca, Mayenda has delivered an insight into the impact that his time in red and white had on him, as well as his thoughts and feelings on the next chapter of his blossoming career.
Asked whether he found it difficult to adapt to a reduced role in Regis Le Bris’ plans in the aftermath of Sunderland’s promotion back to the Premier League last year, the 21-year-old replied: “I wouldn't describe it as tough, but rather a learning experience. I learned a lot from the Premier League.
“We came from the Championship, the team changed a lot, they brought in experienced players like [Granit] Xhaka, and I learned a great deal from him. I tried to give everything for the team, and the end result was very positive because we had a historic season, finishing seventh in the Premier League and qualifying for the Europa League.
“The level of the Premier League is very high. Especially that of the Big Six. Playing those kinds of matches every week helps you mature and evolve. You know that every game is difficult and it keeps you focused. It's an experience that helps you grow a lot.”
Turning his attention to motivation behind his to decision to seal a move to Rennes, Mayenda continued: “Above all, Rennes showed a lot of confidence in me. I felt that my time at Sunderland had come to an end after helping them return to where they belonged. On a personal level, I felt that my progression should take this path.”

On his £22 million price tag, and whether he feels any pressure as a consequence of it, Mayenda added: “I'm taking it all in stride because the transfer fee only reflects the confidence Rennes has in me. I try not to put too much pressure on myself. All I have to do is play the way I know how and contribute to the team. As long as I perform, nobody will talk about the price.
“When the Rennes option came up, I wasn't thinking about the short term. This is my career, and this is my story. I've already been in France in the Second Division, I went to the Championship, I discovered the Premier League, and now I felt it was time for a change of scenery. Rennes was a good team to continue developing, and they've given me the opportunity to play in the French First Division. They trust me, and I want to give my all for Rennes. What comes next, we'll see. I don't think going from the Premier League to Ligue 1 is a step backward, but rather part of my progression.”
