Leeds United’s transfer approach has been different this summer compared to last year.
Last year, we signed 10 players to round out Daniel Farke’s squad. The most expensive of these additions was the initial £18million we paid for Noah Okafor.
This summer, it seems that the 49ers are signing fewer players. However, the fees they are being brought in for are far bigger in an attempt to raise the ceiling of the squad. James Trafford and Tarik Muharemovic are examples of this, as the pair were signed for a combined £74million.
Recent reports suggest Leeds could continue this transfer approach with a striker they continue to be linked to. If this striker did arrive, it could also push an existing Leeds player even closer to the exit door.
Leeds linked with £50m-rated Liam Delap amid Lukas Nmecha rumours
Recent reports from the Daily Mail have emerged linking Lukas Nmecha with a sensational move to Wrexham.
The German striker proved to be a solid backup option behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin last season, scoring six league goals.
But with it being clear that Leeds are in the market for another striker, this could potentially push Nmecha towards the exit door. The forward will surely want to avoid sliding down the pecking order even further.
Reports last month suggested Leeds were one of the clubs interested in signing Liam Delap from Chelsea.
Graham Smyth came out and shot this potential transfer down, but recently, Delap’s name has cropped back up.
According to a report from Ben Jacobs, Leeds, alongside Nottingham Forest and Everton, are in the race to sign Delap. Chelsea are said to be demanding £50million for the 23-year-old. But the report suggests the interested clubs believe they could negotiate this down to £40million.
I’ve touched on this before, but I certainly wouldn’t be buying Delap for such an extortionate fee. But how much we end up forking out for a new number nine could potentially sway Nmecha’s decision as to whether he pushes to leave this summer.

I find it hard to believe that Delap will be the forward the 49ers go in for this summer. Especially at that price.
But if we could end up negotiating a better deal for the Englishman potentially, who knows?
But the fact we are being linked with strikers in that price bracket could suggest we are willing to replicate the transfer approach we took with Trafford and Muharemovic with a new striker. That being forking out a large fee for a player who would drastically improve Farke’s options.
If this were the case, it’d be hard to blame Nmecha if he wanted to leave. Whether that be to Wrexham or elsewhere.
The last thing the 27-year-old would want is to fall into obscurity, similarly to how Joel Piroe did last season.
So if it became obvious that he wouldn’t play behind Calvert-Lewin and another big-money addition, Nmecha may be one to keep an eye on towards the back end of the window in regard to a potential exit.
