Newcastle United chief executive officer David Hopkinson has spoken about the club’s training ground plans as attention turns to St James’ Park.
Newcastle United have confirmed plans to build a £190million world-class training facility at the Woolsington Hall estate near Newcastle International Airport.
The plans are subject to planning permission and local resident approval after an agreement was reached for the club to purchase the estate.
It is the first major off-field landmark announced by the club since the 2021 PIF-led takeover. But there is still one major topic that needs addressing.

While progress has been made regarding the training ground, even Newcastle’s existing facility ‘The KNOX’ at Darsley Park has undergone significant refurbishment in recent years, a decision over the future of St James’ Park has not been forthcoming.
The club previously claimed an update would be provided to supporters in early 2025, but those plans have since been shelved. And 18 months on, the club are still yet to go public with a decision.
Newcastle recently confirmed the purchase of the Leazes Terrace building next to St James’ Park with the future of the stadium cited as a motivating factor behind the deal, which is understood to be worth around £25million.

And Newcastle chief executive officer has explained why the club is keeping its cards close to its chest regarding significant infrastructure announcements such as the stadium and, until recently, the training ground.
“No,” Hopkinson said earlier this month when asked if there would be a stadium update.
“Training ground, we are moving quite quickly on. Look, one of the themes I've been wrestling with the last while - couple of weeks, a month - is how do we balance transparency and transaction?
“You [local media] are dogged; your constituents want to know. And we want our stakeholders to know. But in the moment as we're trying to conclude a transaction [for the training ground] is not the moment to tell people 'Here's what we're trying to do'.
“Being fully transparent about what we wanted to do with Leazes Terrace would have been diametrically opposed to being able to actually conclude that deal.
“We're going to buy some land for our future training ground and getting really granular on what we pay wouldn't be helpful. We want to be transparent, but that doesn't mean we can invite everyone into every part of the strategy.”

Now that progress has been made regarding the training ground, the club has gone public with its plans. Now, supporters eagerly await a decision over the future of St James’ Park.
An extension of the current site was initially favoured before the club’s stance was understood to have changed to a new purpose-built stadium near the current site. Either way, the process is significantly more complicated and emotionally charged than the training ground plans. Newcastle have still not gone public with their plans, but an update is expected.
St James’ Park is expected to host matches at the 2028 European Championships, so no major changes to the stadium are expected anytime soon. The club plans to have the training ground ready for use for the 2029/30 season which ties in with Hopkinson’s ambition to make the club among the best in the Premier League by the end of the decade.
A stadium upgrade would certainly go a long way to helping the club realise those ambitions.
