Hull 2-0 Manchester United: Tigers maul Carrick's side on dream return

First-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy sent Hull City into dreamland as they marked their return with a famous victory over Manchester United.

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United travelled north-east to the MKM Stadium to face newly promoted Hull City in the first early kick-off of the year.

Two new faces were handed their competitive debuts in the Manchester United starting XI, with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both selected from the outset.

Promising youngster Ayden Heaven partnered Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence, while Patrick Dorgu was deployed on the left wing. Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, returned to the matchday squad but was named among the substitutes.

Story of the Match

The game began much as many had expected, with Hull City happy to settle into a compact 5-4-1 shape and frustrate Manchester United in the opening stages.

The first real chance of the afternoon fell to the visitors. A hopeful cross from Luke Shaw was allowed to run by Nobel Mendy, who appeared unaware of the danger behind him. Bryan Mbeumo reacted quickest, striking a superb first-time volley towards goal, but Konstantinos Tzolakis produced a huge save with his forearm to keep the scores level.

Hull soon had an opportunity of their own in front of the home crowd. Ryan Giles made progress down the left-hand side before delivering a deep cross into the box. Ollie McBurnie attacked it with real intent, directing his header towards the bottom corner, but Senne Lammens was equal to it, getting down well to his right to make the save.

Just minutes later, Giles again found space down the left. His whipped delivery looked to be creeping towards goal, forcing Lammens to readjust quickly and push the ball behind for a corner.

However, Hull made their pressure count from the resulting set piece. A superb ball into the box was flicked on at the near post by John Egan and met by McBurnie at the back post, whose volley forced another incredible save from Lammens. The rebound, though, fell perfectly inside the six-yard box for Semi Ajayi, who blasted the ball into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Hull used the opening goal as a real source of momentum, continuing to target the left-hand side through the dangerous Ryan Giles. Manchester United struggled to regain control, although they did create a couple of opportunities to reduce the deficit.

Patrick Dorgu had a half-chance inside the area, but his volley from a tight angle flew wide under pressure from John Egan. Bryan Mbeumo then attempted an acrobatic overhead kick, but his effort was comfortably dealt with before being cleared behind for a corner.

However, it was Hull who continued to make their momentum count. Another set piece from the left-hand side, delivered by Regan Slater, caused problems for the United defence. Nobel Mendy rose highest to meet the delivery, powering his header beyond Senne Lammens, who had no chance of keeping it out, as the Tigers doubled their lead.

Michael Carrick was not prepared to wait around for a reaction and made an attacking change at the break. Marcus Rashford was introduced for Patrick Dorgu, marking his return to Premier League action and his first appearance for Manchester United wearing the number nine shirt.

As the second half progressed, Manchester United huffed and puffed but continued to find Hull's back line difficult to break down. Semi Ajayi, John Egan and Nobel Mendy stood firm, clearing everything that came their way, while Konstantinos Tzolakis was quick off his line to collect any balls played in behind.

Just after the hour mark, both of Hull's goalscorers were forced off through injury. Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy were replaced by Paddy McNair and Lucas Herrington respectively, disrupting the hosts' impressive defensive unit.

United responded with changes of their own, as Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko replaced Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, with Carrick looking to add greater attacking quality as his side searched for a route back into the contest.

Hull nearly added a third when Cody Drameh tried his luck from outside the box, but his right-footed effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.

The best chance of the second half, however, fell to Manchester United. A clever turn and perfectly weighted pass from Matheus Cunha released Bryan Mbeumo through on goal, but Tzolakis produced another excellent stop, getting down quickly to his right-hand side to keep the score at 2-0.

With 10 minutes remaining, Michael Carrick shuffled his pack once again, introducing Diogo Dalot and Shea Lacey in place of Noussair Mazraoui and Matheus Cunha as Manchester United searched for a way back into the contest.

Moments later, United came close to creating an opportunity when Marcus Rashford delivered an excellent right-footed cross into the box. The delivery looked destined to be met by Benjamin Sesko, but the striker mistimed his jump and was unable to make a clean connection.

Despite Manchester United's efforts, they were unable to find a way through a resilient Hull City defence. The Premier League newcomers stood firm until the final whistle, securing a well-deserved clean sheet and three points at the MKM Stadium in their first-ever top flight victory over Manchester United.

Player of the game- John Egan

While much of the plaudits will deservedly go to the likes of Ollie McBurnie, Ryan Giles and Hull's two goalscoring centre-backs, the experienced John Egan played a crucial role in the Tigers' defensive display.

The Irishman marshalled the Hull back line superbly, producing the type of performance associated with a traditional, old-fashioned centre-back. Egan recorded 21 defensive contributions, including 18 clearances, three blocks and three recoveries, while also winning both of his aerial duels.

With Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko all kept relatively quiet, Manchester United struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Egan's leadership, alongside the defensive shape, quality and bravery shown throughout Hull's back line, ensured the hosts were able to see out a well-deserved clean sheet and victory.

If Hull are to retain their Premier League status, performances like Egan's will be vital throughout the remainder of the campaign.
