Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was proven right by his take on Manchester United after the latter lost its opening Premier League game to Hull City

Jamie Carragher's verdict that Liverpool is in a better position than Manchester United right now was instantly proven right after the latter lost its opening Premier League game to newly promoted Hull City.
Despite the positive atmosphere around Man United heading into the new season following a third-place finish in the Premier League last term, Michael Carrick's side found themselves 2-0 down at half-time against Hull. While the Tigers were excellent at MKM Stadium on Saturday, United were abysmal.
Just a day prior to Arsenal's 3-0 win over Coventry in the 2026/27 Premier League opener, Carragher appeared on Sky Sports alongside Gary Neville, Ian Wright, and Dave Jones, where the former Liverpool defender issued his verdict on United potentially being in a better situation than the Reds right now.

"People are getting very carried away with Man United," Carragher told Neville, Wright, and Jones.
"Man United's back four is the same back four they had five years ago."
That then prompted Neville to ask Carragher, "But are you a little bit worried about Liverpool this season?" to which the latter replied, "We finished fifth last season, it can't be any worse than last season."
"But what I'm saying to you is, do you think that Liverpool are going to improve upon that this season?" added Neville.

Carragher then explained why he believes the Reds will be better this season, citing his belief that they will not lose as many games as they did last term, while adding that the fitness and form of Alexander Isak, should he return to the level he was at Newcastle United, will also help.
"The performances will improve; they won't lose as many games as they did last season," said Carragher.
"I don't believe that, and hopefully Isak, if he's fit, he is one of the top strikers in the league, isn't he. But they've still got to get reinforcements in the window and get wingers in with pace, which I think they will do."

However, Neville then claimed that he believes United is in a better position than Liverpool right now, given that the Reds still need to add some firepower and potentially another midfielder this summer.
"I think Manchester United, currently, are probably in a better place than Liverpool, would you agree?" Neville asked Carragher.
But, the former Reds defender was having none of Neville claims. "Right now? No I think Liverpool's best XI is still better than Manchester United's best right now ... I'm not lying, I think they are!" replied Carragher.
