Christopher Nkunku has been linked with a move to [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/22/liverpool-announce-30m-transfer-facing-newcastle-united/) in recent days. And he is one of the few big-name players who have been on the club’s radar this summer. They have largely been happy to go after youngsters, despite the amount of quality and experience that has departed St James’ Park over the past few months.
Obviously, a potential move for Nkunky would divide the opinion of the fans. On one hand, there is little doubt about his quality. In Germany, he was one of the best players in the Bundesliga.
That being said, we have also seen him struggle since departing Germany. Nkunku did not meet expectations at Chelsea. And his time at AC Milan has not been any better.
So, Nkunku looks set to be on the move again. Newcastle United are believed to have held talks over a potential move for the Frenchman. And now, his stance on his next destination has been confirmed.
According to [Fabrizio Romano](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2091124321557045294), RB Leipzig remain favourites to sign Nkunku as the Frenchman wants to return to Germany, after assessing all the proposals. Negotiations are still ongoing with AC Milan over the conditions of a loan deal.
So, a couple of things become clear from this update. The first is that Nkunky would prefer a move back to Germany over a return to the Premier League.
It is not hard to see why. After two failed stints, Nkunku finds himself at a crossroads in his career. So, it is very natural for him to consider returning to a place where he was a grand success in the past.
Going back to RB Leipzig would feel like going back home for Nkunku. After all, that is where he won the Bundesliga Player of the Season and topped the scoring charts in the following campaign. On the other hand, heading back to the Premier League would represent a risk that he might not be able to afford at this point in his career.
Another interesting thing we have learned is RB Leipzig are trying to sign Nkunku on a loan basis. Initially, it was reported that AC Milan wanted a permanent exit and also were looking to recoup the fee they paid to sign the Frenchman from Chelsea.
It is starting to feel like Nkunku might be the next player Newcastle United miss out on this summer. And unfortunately, it has been a pretty common occurrence in this window.
They have had a tough time convincing players to head to St James’ Park. Whether that be youngsters like Johan Manzambi and Victor Munoz or established names like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Joao Palhinha.
Unless something unexpected happens, Nkunku’s name looks set to be added to that worryingly long list. And with little time left in the transfer window, Newcastle United cannot afford to let this drag on.
If Nkunku wants to return to Germany and join RB Leipzig, it is best for Newcastle United to turn their attention immediately and look for alternatives.
