Newcastle will be without their captain and key defender Dan Burn for Sunday’s clash with Liverpool, with a new injury confirmed just hours before kickoff.
Matthias Jaissle’s preparations for the campaign have been far from ideal, and the new Newcastle head coach’s plans have now taken another blow.
The Mail‘s Craig Hope has revealed on X that Burn – who was appointed captain earlier this month – will not be involved against Liverpool due to an ankle injury.
Burn is facing a number of weeks out after suffering the issue in training this week.

It leaves Jaissle likely to start a centre-back pairing of Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman, flanked by new right-back Amar Dedic and fit-again left-back Lewis Hall.
Newcastle were already without Joelinton and Tino Livramento along with further doubts over Joe Willock, Fabian Schar and Lewis Miley at least as starters.
Key midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have both been sold as well as Anthony Gordon, while Kieran Trippier was among those to have been released.

The Magpies have been busy in terms of recruitment, with Dedic the latest arrival to follow goalkeepers Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen, midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba and winger Bazoumana Toure.
But there is a distinct lack of experience – not least in the Premier League – available to a head coach who only took over on August 5.
Jaissle was brought in as replacement for Eddie Howe following a shock resignation midway through pre-season – he is one of six new managers Andoni Iraola will face in his first six games in charge of Liverpool.
