The Villa boss tried to strike an upbeat tone despite a heavy defeat.
Unai Emery admitted Villa “lost something emotionally” during Sunday’s sobering 4-0 defeat at Brighton.
The boss issued a call for calm after watching his team endure a nightmare start to the Premier League season.
Villa conceded four times in 23 minutes and then saw new signing Joao Gomes sent-off for violent conduct.
The £38million signing from Wolves had earlier been culpable for Brighton’s fourth goal when he lost possession on the edge of his own box.
But Emery is confident the midfielder will learn from the mistake and also believes Villa, who have experienced a summer of huge change, will get stronger.
“We made some mistakes and they scored goals in 25 minutes - we lost everything,” he said. “It was a strange moment that we had, conceding four goals, it’s not normal. We were lost a little bit emotionally.
“In the first half in the dressing room we spoke about how we react and that we never give up before now.
“In the second half I am happy with how we responded and the players showed their maturity, thinking about how we are building the team in the next days and months.
“This problem we had every season and we overcame it every season. It is something we have to accept and always we reacted, especially the players.
“The circumstances we have, when we are building the team again. I am positive but I know we need time.”
Gomes’ presence in the starting XI had been a pre-match boost following a quicker than expected recovery from a calf injury.
But he will now miss the next three Premier League matches through suspension after kicking out at Georginio Rutter.
Referee Peter Bankes missed the incident at the time but was then sent to the monitor by VAR Matthew Donohue and showed Gomes a red card.
By then the match was already lost after dreadful defending was pounced on by the hosts.
The unlucky Victor Lindelof opened the scoring through an own goal, with Maxim De Cuyper and Jack Hinshelwood, who netted twice, taking advantage of Villa’s generosity.
Gomes was the only one of Villa’s summer signing to start the match, with Matteo Ruggeri and Alejandro Garnacho coming off the bench in the closing stages.
Up to four further additions are possible before the transfer deadline on Tuesday week, with former Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka poised to be the first of those.
Emery also delivered promising fitness updates on Brian Madjo and record signing Johan Manzambi, who he hopes can begin training early next month.
Villa play four more Premier League fixtures and one in the Champions League before a three-week international break.
Emery said: “Of course, we lost the three points. In the last three years, until the transfer window finishes, we have had problems like we are having now.
“The players here today are keeping the mentality I want for the team. Not complaining or blaming, even with a tough result today.
“We were focused and we were motivated and excited to start playing with our circumstances.
“The players were showing their capacity to compete and play with circumstances, being on the field comfortable.”
