A Brighton fan who attended their Premier League win over Aston Villa has died, the club have confirmed.
The Seagulls enjoyed the perfect start to their campaign as they hammered Unai Emery's side on Sunday, recording a 4-0 win. However the club have since confirmed that a fan felt unwell as he left the Amex, but the emergency services couldn't save him.
A Brighton statement read: “Following today’s game against Aston Villa, sadly a 72-year-old male Brighton & Hove Albion supporter passed away after the match. The gentleman took unwell as he was leaving the stadium to board a supporters’ club bus in the coach park. Despite the best efforts of emergency services and club staff, the medical team were unable to save him.
“South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics, St John’s Ambulance, Sussex Police, MB Medical Solutions, the club’s crowd doctor and our stewards worked together to ensure the individual was given the best possible care, including prolonged CPR on the scene.”
CEO Paul Barber added: “What should have been an ordinary and happy journey home ended in heartbreaking circumstances, and we are all shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our supporters. We extend our sincere condolences to the gentleman’s family and friends.”
It is the second year in a row that a man has died after attending Brighton’s opening game of the season.
