‘Here we go’ – Fabrizio Romano drops Christopher Nkunku news after Newcastle United talks

[Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/24/agreement-almost-done-fabrizio-romano-newcastle-united-transfer-news/) kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw against Liverpool. And the Magpies will feel that they deserved to win on the basis of their performance.

There is little time to dwell on the result though. The focus needs to be straight back on the transfer market and finishing strong, after so many stumbles.

Christopher Nkunku is someone who has been linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent weeks. In fact, multiple reliable outlets have confirmed that contacts have been made regarding a potential move.

Now, we finally know where Nkunku will be playing his football next season. And whether it is good news or bad depends on what you wanted to see happen.

According to [Fabrizio Romano](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2091630305132057006), RB Leipzig have reached a verbal agreement to sign Nkunku from AC Milan. The deal is here we go.

Documents are being exchanged now after the deal was put in place at a €3.5 million loan fee plus a buy option clause slightly under €30 million. Nkunku wanted to join Rb Leipzig.

So, this is another signing Newcastle United showed interest in but were not able to pull off. Unfortunately, that has happened far too often so far this summer.

Victor Munoz, who they came up against yesterday, moved to Liverpool when a deal with Newcastle United had seemed very close. Johan Manzambi chose Aston Villa even after the Magpies had agreed a fee with his then club SC Freiburg.

More recently, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned down a move to Newcastle United. Joao Palhinha also joined Benfica despite the Magpies showing interest. And now, Nkunku’s name has been added to that list.

The links with Nkunku had actually divided the opinions of the Newcastle United fanbase. A lot of supporters were excited by the prospect of the club signing the former Bundesliga Player of the Season and top goalscorer.

Then, there was another section that was not particularly keen after Nkunku’s failed spells at Chelsea and AC Milan. Ultimately, a move to Newcastle United has not happened.

One player who Newcastle do seem to be closing in on is Nico Gonzalez. Talks are believed to have progressed with Manchester City and an agreement might not be far away.

It remains to be seen if Gonzalez himself is going to be interested in joining Newcastle United. The fans will certainly hope so, having seen so many proposed moves collapse already.
