Manchester United’s season could’ve barely got off to a worse start. Having been talked about as potential outsiders for the Premier League title, the Red Devils were humbled by Hull City on opening day, losing 2-0 to the newly-promoted outfit. It was a proper reality check for Michael Carrick, whose side could’ve been mistaken for the top-flight newbies instead, such was their timid approach to the match.
Far too often, United’s feeble midfielders were bullied off the ball, while their defenders weren’t exactly up for the fight either. United have already moved to try and fix one half of that problem. Having spent big on Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, United are on the verge of signing Carlos Baleba from Brighton. The idea is for Baleba to sit in front of the back four and offer protection, which should, at least in theory, reduce the extent to which it is exposed, as it was vs Hull.
United aren’t said to be done there, though. Talk has picked up surrounding more additions before the transfer window shuts next week. But who exactly should United be targeting?
That was the question we put to Express Sport readers and members of the United WhatsApp community in a poll, with the response an unequivocal one. In a combined vote, over 57 per cent of voters said Lewis Hall ought to be the night player United bring through the Old Trafford door.

Hall has been linked with a switch to United all summer, but Newcastle have made it abundantly clear he won’t be available on the cheap. The Magpies have endured a summer to forget, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon having left the St. James’ Park outfit.

As such, United will have to make Hall the most expensive left-back of all time to secure his signature. Elsewhere, the next biggest hitter was Victor Osimhen, who commanded a respectable 23 per cent of the vote.
The striker has been linked to a move away from Galatasaray, with United said to be contemplating further attacking additions to the squad. That’s despite spending the best part of £300million on attackers last summer, with Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha joining to varying degrees of success.
Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has emerged as an alternative to Hall, received a healthy 11 per cent of the vote, while the likes of David Raum, Antonee Robinson, Jorge Salinas and Ivan Toney made up the rest of the votes.
