Newcastle United began their season with a tough result to take on Sunday, leading Liverpool 2-1 until the very final seconds of the game, when the away side were awarded a penalty that they converted. Matthias Jaissle had to settle for a point on his league debut in charge, but there were positives for the Magpies to take, especially after a tough summer that has lead to concern over the quality of the squad.
Jaissle's men have a tough start to the season, although this weekend they take on a Tottenham side that looked a long way off where they hope to be in their opening weekend clash. But before the trip to North London, Newcastle have a Carabao Cup clash with West Brom, which they will go into on the back of a fresh Dan Burn injury blow. Here we round up the latest on the injury front.
Joelinton (Groin)
Return date: Mid-September
Joelinton
Joelinton is going to be sidelined for another two or three weeks with his groin issue. Jaissle said last week: "Yeah, for sure, he's out for a couple of weeks, but I don't want to go too much into detail as there will always be specialists involved. The medical department are aware of it, and I'm really confident that he will be back ASAP."
Tino Livramento (Calf)
Return date: Early September
Livramento is close to returning, but he is still another week or two away. Jaissle said before the opening game: "It's for sure too early. We had just one training session where he was partially involved, so we need to be smart with his progress. We can't wait until he's 100 per cent ready."
Dan Burn (Ankle)
Return date: Early October
In a fresh blow, it now looks as though Burn will be out of action for the next seven games, with his return expected after the international break. Burn suffered ankle ligament damage, and while initially thought to be less serious, he is now expected to miss the first stretch of the season, which will be a big blow to Jaissle and the Magpies.
William Osula (Ankle)
Return date: Unknown
We don't yet know the true extent of Osula's injury after he clashed with Virgil van Dijk, suffering an ankle injury. Early reports suggest the injury is not a significant one, but it's not clear whether he can return for the Carabao Cup game or even this weekend. As is often the case with ankle injuries, it will likely be a case of strengthening it and seeing how it responds over the coming days.
