‘Everything agreed’ – Fabrizio Romano drops fantastic late-night news for Newcastle United

[Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/24/close-agreeing-deal-chelsea-sudden-update-newcastle-united-striker-target/) have endured a tough summer so far. But finally, with the Premier League season kicking off, it looks like things might be starting to turn around for the Magpies.

Newcastle United put in an excellent performance in their opening game of the Premier League season, drawing 2-2 against Liverpool. And if not for the late penalty, the Magpies would have won.

Off the pitch, Newcastle United have a lot to be happy about as well. All summer, they have struggled to get deals over the line. But now, it looks they are on the verge of their most high-profile addition of the transfer window.

While speaking on his [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILqhv1vRXpw) channel in a late-night transfer update video, Fabrizio Romano said about the situation involving Newcastle United, Manchester City and Nico Gonzalez:

> I can confirm to you my information on Nico Gonzalez, one of the stories of the day. Newcastle have their new midfielder. Everything is being planned in terms of medical test, contract signing. Everything has been agreed between Nico, his agent Jorge Mendes, and Newcastle in terms of contract. Everything agreed between the two clubs, Manchester City and Newcastle. My understanding is that Manchester City already gave the green light for the player to go have a medical and sign the contract. So, it’s now time to schedule everything. And then Nico Gonzalez this week will become a new Newcastle player. They need their quality midfielder, need leadership after losing Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, and Nico is coming. £47 million plus three in add-ons.

Manchester City had always seemed open to the departure of Nico Gonzalez this summer. In fact, it has been very curious the number of players the club have let go of in recent weeks.

This is not how Manchester City usually work. And you can expect them to push for at least one major signing as we head towards the end of the summer transfer window.

It would not be a surprise for them to put in a blockbuster bid for Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea, who is believed to be available for around £120 million. All of these departures from midfield might be pointing towards that.

As for Newcastle United, it does not matter what Man City do or does not do next. They can be satisfied with knowing that they are on the verge of signing Gonzalez.

Gonzalez immediately adds Premier League experience to the middle of the park. The likes of Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba needed someone like that around them to continue their development.

At the same time, it is not just Premier League experience that Gonzalez is bringing. He has also played for clubs like Valencia, Barcelona and FC Porto.

You’ve got to have some genuine quality to have done all this at just 24 years of age. And at Newcastle United, he might finally get the chance to be a central figure in a Premier League team instead of being a bit-part player for Man City.

Newcastle United have not signed a lot of ready-made starters this summer. But it is safe to say that Gonzalez is one who is expected to be a mainstay in the Premier League.
