Newcastle United are on the verge of strengthening their midfield. It is believed that everything has been agreed with both Nico Gonzalez and Manchester City. So, that move looks to be only a matter of time.
On the other hand, there are other positions across the pitch where Newcastle United still need to bring in reinforcements. And it looks like they could be getting ready to put in a bid for a striker who can easily play on the wing as well.
Now, Newcastle United’s frontline has been a weakness since last summer, when Alexander Isak left to join Liverpool. Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa combined for merely 14 goals last season.
So, Newcastle United could do with another option up top. And it looks like a Belgian international has caught their eye, with a ‘now or never’ bid set to be made.
Newcastle United ready to make bid for Belgian international
According to Sacha Tavolieri, Newcastle United are set to make a final offer for Matias Fernandez-Pardo. The Magpies are preparing to submit a final €60 million bid, including bonuses, to convince Lille. It’s now or never.
Fernandez-Pardo is a full Belgian international. And he has impressed with his displays for Lille as well. Also, at 21 years of age, he fits the profile Newcastle United have added all summer.
Now, Fernandez-Pardo’s numbers do not really pop out of the page. Last season, he scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in 41 games for Lille across all competitions.
It is worth mentioning, though that Fernandez-Pardo mostly played on the wings at the start of the campaign. But he was regularly used as a centre-forward in the second half of the campaign.
That is because the output was significantly better in that role. In 16 games started as a centre-forward, Fernandez-Pardo scored 7 goals and provided 4 assists.
Why signing Fernandez-Pardo makes sense
Fernandez-Pardo would be another signing, keeping the future in mind. That being said, he can contribute to the senior team as well.
His versatility is an asset. Newcastle United need to add depth both up top and on the flanks. Fernandez-Pardo has the ability to play in all three of those positions.
Also, Wissa’s brilliant performance in the opening game against Liverpool should not be ignored. He also scored three goals at the World Cup and looks up for it.
So, Newcastle United’s forward line could look much improved this season. Do not be surprised to see the Magpies exceed expectations going forward.
