Matthias Jaissle revealed Newcastle’s owners attempted to persuade him to join the club using clips of the city’s celebrations after the 2025 Carabao Cup triumph.

Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle ended a 70-year wait for domestic silverware 18 months ago and an ensuing parade on two open-top buses around the city centre brought out hundreds of thousands of supporters.
Jaissle, who succeeded Howe this summer as Newcastle head coach, said with a smile: “They tried to convince me with that footage. It was not needed, it was not needed.”
Newcastle get this season’s Carabao Cup campaign under way against James Morrison’s Albion at St James’ Park on Wednesday, with youngsters Mason Miley and Sean Neave pushing for inclusion.
Summer signings Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure could make their competitive Newcastle debuts, with Jaissle set to run the rule over his squad following Sunday’s season-opening draw against Liverpool.
“The Carabao Cup is a big competition, it is important to the club and we are looking forward to playing that round,” Jaissle added.
“It’s important now that we get things sorted, we analyse the game, we see the availability of the players.
“There were many players who were exhausted, some of them have minor injuries, so we need to see who is available.”
