Aston Villa make opening bid for Jean-Philippe Mateta
According to a report from The Athletic, Aston Villa have made an offer for striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The offer fell considerably short of Crystal Palace’s valuation of the player, with the club expecting a much higher fee for the striker in order to let him leave.
It remains to be seen whether the Villans return with an improved bid, but they have made their intentions clear to sign Mateta in the final week of the transfer window.
The France international is into the final year of his contract amid the player and his representatives’ dispute that the last year of the deal is not legally binding, because it was an extension option activated by the club on his original four-and-a-half-year contract. Nonetheless, he started in Palace’s first game of the season, a 2-0 defeat to Everton.
Mateta has enhanced his profile after consistent goalscoring seasons at Selhurst Park, which is why he is such a coveted commodity in the Premier League and beyond. Aston Villa have concerns in the striker department, and with Ollie Watkins heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, Unai Emery sees the Palace star as a potential replacement. This has seen Villa revive their interest in Mateta after they considered making a move for him back in January.
