Over the last few days, most of the talk surrounding Newcastle United has been about potential signings. It is easy to see why that is the case. With so many key players leaving, the Magpies have needed to bring in replacements but have left it until the final week of the transfer window.
They are on the verge of signing Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City. According to reliable sources, the midfielder is already in Newcastle to complete the move.
On the other hand, the club are also believed to be eager to sign Matias Fernandez-Pardo. The Belgian international is believed to be keen on leaving Lille. Let’s see if the Magpies can find an agreement with the French side.
At the same time, there could be more departures before the transfer window closes. One such player who could still head for the exit door is Joe Willock. But it is going to happen only on one condition.
Newcastle United willing to accept offer on one condition
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United will accept an offer for Joe Willock if they can secure a replacement for the midfielder.
Besiktas are very keen on signing Willock from Newcastle United. And the report goes on to add that the Magpies are “actively” looking for a new central midfielder, and a signing in that area will open the door for an exit.
Willock’s current deal with Newcastle United is believed to run out next summer. And the Magpies might not be open to the idea of seeing him leave as a free agent.
At the same time though, one cannot overlook the fact that Willock remains an important part of this team. He scored in the opening game of the Premier League season against Liverpool. That should have been a timely reminder.
Does Joe Willock leaving hurt Newcastle?
It will be interesting to see whether Gonzalez is considered that ‘replacement’ or if Newcastle United would want to sign another midfielder, before agreeing to part ways with Willock.
It is worth pointing out that the club have also been linked with Barcelona midfielder and Gonzalez’s former teammate, Marc Casado, in recent days.
If someone like Casado can be signed, one can see the club parting ways with Willock soon afterwards. But that seems ambitious at best.
At the same time, Newcastle United need to make sure that they get a competitive transfer fee out of Willock’s exit. Just look at the cash that is being splashed around the league right now.
