Eddie Howe has been earmarked for the England job after Thomas Tuchel, it has been claimed.
Howe stunned Newcastle United fans earlier this summer by standing down after almost five years at the helm. While his last season at the helm was a disappointment, the former Bournemouth boss remains highly regarded in the game, having led the Magpies to Carabao Cup glory in 2025 and to the Champions League.
Howe is now taking a break from the game to spend time with his family but the 48-year-old will have plenty to offer the game when he returns to the dugout. According to Premier League legends Paul Scholes and Dion Dublin, his next job will be with his country.
The pair were responding to a question on The Good, The Bad and The Football show about whether Howe could be the next Manchester United manager. Dublin said: "I think England before Man United. I think they've earmarked him for England.
Scholes agreed but added that the prospect of Howe managing Man United wasn't completely out of the question if Michael Carrick's tenure goes wrong. Scholes said: "If it's a complete disaster for Michael, it wouldn't be the biggest shock in the world, would it?"
However, he pointed out that international management was no longer an older manager's game, adding: "International managers are becoming younger and younger. It used to be you'd get to 60 [and you'd think] 'I can have a nice little 10 days each month.'

Howe will have to wait another couple of years before potentially landing the England job, with Tuchel's contract with the FA expiring after Euro 2028, which will be held around the UK, with St James' Park hosting five matches.
Tuchel came in for heavy criticism for the manner of England's semi-final defeat to Argentina at the World Cup, with some supporters calling for him to go.

The German is adamant that he wants to lead the team to the next Euros, when England will be under intense pressure to deliver a first major tournament victory in 62 years.
If he fails, it would open the door to Howe taking the biggest job in English football. England open their Nations League campaign in late September against world and European champions Spain at Wembley. They then face Czechia (home and away) and Croatia during the extended international break.
