It has been a summer of major change at St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe departing as head coach and talismanic trio Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes sold for a combined £244million.
The Magpies were already well into their squad rebuild when Matthias Jaissle succeeded Howe earlier this month, with Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba and Lukas Hornicek all arriving before the German’s appointment.
Amar Dedic, who worked with Jaissle at RB Salzburg and FC Liefering, became the new boss’ first official signing before Nico Gonzalez completed a £50million move from Premier League rivals Manchester City.

Gonzalez, a statement signing who brings much-needed experience to a young squad, is Newcastle’s seventh arrival of the summer and takes their spending to around £220million. But the club are hoping they are not finished there.
While well-placed sources have told The Gazette it would be premature to “expect” another signing before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline, work continues at pace behind the scenes. Club chiefs remain focused on rounding out the squad and are said to be “relentless” in their work and conversations.
One position Jaissle is keen to see strengthened is No.10, despite Yoane Wissa getting man of the match and Joe Willock scoring in the Magpies’ Premier League opening day draw against Liverpool on Sunday. Willock is wanted by Turkish side Besiktas but will stay on Tyneside if no one arrives, while Jacob Ramsey could also be used in a more advanced role now Gonzalez has arrived.

Newcastle are interested in Lille and Belgium forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who is capable of playing either out wide or centrally. However, a move could prove too expensive, with the French club reportedly demanding up to £60million.
"I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it's depending also if players are leaving as well,” Jaissle said last week when asked how many more signings he wanted.
"For sure, there will be adjustments made, the needs are clear. The management knows about the needs and we are all aligned.”
