Winger Tudor Mendel, who made his senior debut as a late sub in last night’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester City, has signed a new two-year deal which runs to the summer of 2028 with the Blues having an option for a further season.
The 21-year-old joined Town from Anderlecht in September 2024 and has been a regular in the U21s since then, picking up the Academy Player of the Year award last season.
A former England U15 and U17 international during his time with Chelsea, Mendel left West London for the Brussels-based club in July 2023 and featured for their reserves side, RSCA Futures, which plays in the Belgian second tier, before making his move to Suffolk.
Mendel spent most of pre-season training with the first team and featured in the friendlies against Wycombe Wanderers and Le Havre, before making his competitive debut last night, coming on in the 80th minute (bottom right, celebrating Marcelino Nunez’s second goal).
“I am very happy to sign because I feel at home and settled at Ipswich,” he said. “This means that I can keep on progressing within the support structure that we all get here as young players.
“It was a very proud moment to have made my competitive senior debut. I’m now focused on improving and repaying the faith that has been shown in me.
“I want to thank the academy staff for their help in my development and making the transition as easy as possible and also the first-team staff and Gary O’Neil for giving me the opportunity.”
Academy manager Ben Chenery added: “We are incredibly pleased that Tudor has committed his future to the football club.
“Tudor is an exciting talent, who is constantly striving to be the best version he can be, both on and off the pitch.
“It was a proud moment for our academy for him to have made his competitive senior debut and become a benchmark for other players within the system.”
Meanwhile, Mendel’s Town U21s teammate Somto Boniface is facing around a couple of months on the sidelines having suffered a knee injury in the second game of his loan spell at Leyton Orient.
