The German head coach has picked up his first win in charge on a night of thrills and spills at St James' Park
Matthias Jaissle celebrates against West Brom
Anybody who questioned whether Matthias Jaissle would understand the cut and thrust of English cup football were left eating their words here.
The Toon head coach arguably put in as many yards as some of his players as he prowled the touchline and then exploded into life for all three of his side's goals against West Brom. And in stoppage time, he was spotted still fighting for the black and white cause as he rowed with officials and hotly disputed a free-kick deep into the game.
The animated German may have cut a composed figure as he left the field following this five-goal thriller, but what could not be argued with was his desperate will to win on a night that threatened to go wrong after the Baggies grabbed a shock lead.
After Nico Gonalez had been presented to a bumper crowd, there was a buzz in the air on Tyneside as the spending for the summer was taken to £222m. Jaissle's side started on the front foot with Joe Willock forcing a corner inside the first two minutes; however, the Baggies twice cleared their lines after a succession of flag kicks.
Willock twisted and turned on six minutes before sending an effort wide of the upright at the Leazes End as Newcastle kept up their early momentum. Lewis Hall was next to try his luck with a foray into the box and an effort that was easily gathered by Matt Ingram with just nine minutes gone.
The Baggies earned a dangerous free-kick on 18 minutes when Jimmy-Jay Morgan was taken down by Sean Steur, who was booked for the challenge. Isaac Price stepped up to sweep the ball past debutant Ewen Jaouen, who then failed to keep it out from 25 yards as West Brom stunned the black and whites.
Newcastle attempted to muster a response, and on 31 minutes, Bazoumana Toure hit a low shot at Ingram, but it was never troubling the West Brom stopper. Newcastle hauled themselves level on 38 minutes when Steur rolled the ball out wide to Amar Dedic before he crossed for Toure to poke home the finish and make it 1-1.
Jaissle's side - fired up during the interval - emerged with Harvey Barnes on as a substitute as he replaced Toure, and it took the ex-West Brom player three minutes to make an impact. After Malick Thiaw had forced Ingram into a save, Barnes pounced moments later after a corner from the right caused chaos.
It dropped for Thiaw again, who poked it to Barnes before the £38m man fired home from close range and put Newcastle ahead for the first time on the night. Barnes had initially fired the shot in before it was blocked and he followed up to grab his first of the season.
A flurry of changes then followed for Newcastle, and their press was looking good as the likes of Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Lewis Miley got into the faces of West Brom.
However, a failure to convert that pressure into clear-cut chances left the door ajar for West Brom to get back into the game. And that proved to be the case as a Lewis Hall handball resulted in Madley pointing straight to the spot.
Jaouen tried to delay the penalty and was booked for his trouble before Price calmly stepped up and sent him the wrong way with an ice cold spot-kick to the keeper's left with 13 minutes left.
But just as the Baggies started dreaming of a surprise result, Newcastle regained their lead with nine minutes to go in front of a relieved Gallowgate End. This time, Elanga probed down the right and found Dedic before his cross for Barnes allowed him to fire home his second of the night.
West Brom hauled themselves level again after Hall's handball as Madley pointed straight to the spot at the Leazes End. And after Jaouen had been booked for time wasting, Price sent him the wrong way.
Yet their joy would last no longer than four minutes as Newcastle refocused and broke forward again in to regain the lead. Woltemade played in Elanga, and he slipped the ball to Dedic, who cut the ball across for Barnes to finish well and net his second of the night.
With a minute to go, West Brom earned another dangerous free-kick with sub Jayson Molumby curling visicously at goal but Jaouen made a fine stop to deny him. There were six minutes of added time as Newcastle looked to see out the tie and earn Jaissle his first home win.
And they did just that after a thrilling cup tie that underlined Jaissle's will to win, and his hunger for the cup competitions shone through.
