What Will Nico Gonzalez Bring to Newcastle United?
Nico Gonzalez finally became a Newcastle United player this week, as the club got the experienced midfielder they had been looking for all summer.
The 24-year-old Spaniard joins in a £52m deal from Manchester City and is expected to go straight into the team for the weekend game against Tottenham Hotspur.
He is Matthias Jaissle’s second signing. But what will he bring to the team?
Guardiola: “We Call Him Our Mini Rodri”
Man City bought Nico from Porto for nearly £50m last year, primarily as cover for Rodri, who had suffered an ACL injury.
Ironically, Nico made his debut in a 4-0 league win over Newcastle in February 2025 and he ran the show that day.
Then-City manager Pep Guardiola praised him afterwards.
“I’d like to tell you a secret why my game went so well. I don’t know why I didn’t play him before now but the presence of Nico helped us a lot.
“He’ll be an incredible player for the club in the future in terms of mentality. We call him our mini Rodri.”
He needed that mentality. Nico went on to make 59 appearances for City in all competitions, scoring four goals, but his game time was drastically reduced last season when Rodri returned to the side, and he has barely featured for Enzo Maresca.
So what kind of player are Newcastle getting?
He is a defensive midfielder, although he can play centre-mid too. His latest stats show that he has won 93% of his aerial duels, and one of his biggest strengths is winning back possession.
Newcastle lack that kind of guile in midfield. Sean Steur and Lewis Miley played well together in double pivot against Liverpool, but there was a little naivety and they got exposed a few times – particularly for Cody Gakpo’s goal.
Nico has been brought in to add that experience. He will also bring a Malick Thiaw-like composure to the midfield which will help the youngsters, and he suits Jaissle’s “vertical” style of play because he always looks to pass forward, not back.
Nico could prove to be a steal for £50m. Newcastle are ending a turbulent transfer window on a positive note.
