Jack Hinshelwood absence for Brighton vs Tromso and forgotten £25m ace starts

Brighton vs Tromso in the Conference League play-off second leg at the Amex Stadium

Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood was a notable absentee from the starting XI to face Tromso.

Hinshelwood started and scored twice last Sunday as Albion thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 in the Premier League.

The academy graduate trained with the squad on Wednesday but surprisingly is not in the matchday squad to face the Norwegians.

Hinshelwood usually operates in the No 10 role and was expected to play a key role as Brighton look to advance to the league stages of Europe's third tier competition.

Instead Matt O'Riley - who joined for £25m from Celtic in 2024 - starts for the Seagulls for the first time since August 24, 2025 in the Premier League against Everton.

The former Celtic playmaker is almost the forgotten man at Brighton and spent the first half of last season on loan at Marseille.

He returned last January and made just one substitute appearance in the Premier League for Fabian Hurzler's men.

Brighton confirmed that Hinshelwood is “injured” but the extent of the issue is unknown.

It is thought he picked up an issue during training.

More details will be on the Sussex World website following the post match press conferecne with Fabian Hurzeler.

Same Brighton back four

Elsewhere, Brighton stick with the same backline t

hat kept a clean sheet against Villa. Bart Verbruggen is between the sticks with his Dutch colleague Mats Wiefferat right back.

Lewis Dunk partners £50m summer signing Luka Vuskovic at the heart of the defence and Olivier is at left back. Regular left back Ferdi Kadioglu missed the Villa clash with a small injury and returns to the bench.

Experienced German Pascal Gross starts in midfield alongside Sweden international Yasin Ayari and Maxim De Cuyper keeps his place on the right flank after impressing against Aston Villa.

Diego Gomez goes again on the left and Charalampos Kostoulas gets a rare start as Georginio - who has impressed so far this season - misses out with injury.
