Four Things We Learned from Hull City 2-0 Man United

It was a frustrating afternoon for Micheal Carrick, whose side produced a disjointed and lacklustre performance, particularly in the first half.

Hull City took the lead after Semi Ajayi converted a loose ball from a corner kick within the first 20 minutes of the first half. Nobel Mendy brilliant header doubled the Tigers lead just before half time. Manchester Utd failed to respond in the second half and suffered their first defeat of the season.

Here are four things we learned

Manchester United still have a set-piece problem

While the Red Devils had a fantastic end to last season by finishing in third position , United’s weakness at defending set pieces continues to cost them valuable points. Both of the goals conceded by The Reds were curtesy of poor defending from dead ball situations. If Michael Carrick’s men want to improve on performances from last season then more concentration in defence is needed to prevent conceding from set pieces.

Defensive reinforcements remain a priority

The manner of the two goals underlined a familiar issue. Hull City did not need open-play brilliance to punish United; they simply exploited gaps and hesitancy at corners and free-kicks. Until the club addresses the lack of aerial presence, organisation and leadership at the back, these soft concessions will keep undermining otherwise solid performances. A centre-back with genuine set-piece quality look essential before the transfer window closes.

Carrick has plenty of work to do

Michael Carrick’s side looked disjointed and short of intensity for long spells. The structure that carried them to third last season has not yet reappeared, and individual errors combined with a lack of midfield control allowed Hull to dictate large periods of the game. Carrick will know the standards required; this result is a clear reminder that the rebuild is still in its early stages and that both tactical clarity and squad intensity need rapid improvement.

The new signings need time to settle

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans were among the summer arrivals still finding their feet, while other key players looked short of peak sharpness. Chemistry and match fitness take time, particularly after a demanding pre-season. United cannot afford a prolonged bedding-in period if they are to challenge at the top end of the table again. Getting Santos, Tielemans and the rest of the new faces up to speed, while restoring the squad’s collective fitness, will be among Carrick’s most urgent tasks in the coming weeks.
