Liverpool move for PSG star hijacked by surprise Premier League rivals

Aston Villa have reached an agreement in principle with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye, talkSPORT understands.

The 18-year-old is due to join the Premier League club in a €55million (£47m) deal.

Mbaye now appears to be heading for Villa

Mbaye's move to Villa Park will come as a blow to Liverpool, who have long been linked with him this summer.

European football journalist Andy Brassell tipped Mbaye as an ideal alternative for the Reds if they were unable to agree a deal for his PSG teammate Bradley Barcola.

However, it's Villa who appear to have won the race for the highly-rated teenager.

Mbaye will join Alejandro Garnacho, who is on loan from Chelsea, as a new winger option this season.

talkSPORT understands that Villa are now working on personal terms, and Liverpool only held exploratory talks for the winger.

Villa seal shock deal for Mbaye

In a battle to comply with PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) and SCR (squad coast ratio), Villa have had to sell numerous players.

Morgan Rogers was the first big departure in a record £117m transfer to Chelsea, and Ezri Konsa has joined Arsenal for around £50m.

Youri Tielemans also left for Manchester United in a £35m switch, so much of Villa's Europa League-winning side has been dismantled.

However, with just days remaining until the September 1 transfer deadline, Villa are giving one final push to strengthen for the season.

Johan Manzambi became their club-record signing in July as he made a £59.5m move from SC Freiburg.

This is set to be beaten by the arrival of Nicolas Jackson, who is set to sign in a £65m switch from Chelsea.

Mbaye's deal won't be as expensive, but he will arrive at the club as a much-needed addition after a disastrous start to the season.

Villa were well-beaten 4-0 by Brighton and had Joao Gomes sent off in their Premier League opener.
