Liam Millar's goal condemned Coventry City to defeat against Hull City.
COVENTRY City’s home Premier League return after 25 years away ended in a 1-0 defeat against fellow newly-promoted side Hull City.
A late goal from Liam Millar condemned the Sky Blues to defeat in the first-ever Premier League game played at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Coventry have now lost both of their opening two league matches this season since returning to the top flight.
The game’s first chance fell to Coventry as Caleb Yirenkyi curled a high ball into the box which Taiwo Awoniyi headed straight into the arms of Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
Awoniyi went close again later in the first half when he instinctively guided a shot towards goal with his thigh from six-yards only for Tzolakis to tip the ball around the post at full stretch diving low down to his right.
Hull tested Sky Blues stopper Carl Rushworth early in the second period as Nobel Mendy unleashed a powerful towards goal from distance which Rushworth claimed at the second attempt.
The visitors spurned a golden chance to take the lead later in the second half when Oli McBurnie’s pass released substitute Millar who fired a low effort wide from the edge of the penalty area with a teammate in support.
However, Millar atoned for his earlier miss on 82 minutes when he raced onto Mohamed Belloumi’s through ball and coolly finished low past Rushworth following a quick break.
Frank Lampard’s side could not find a way back into the game in the remaining minutes on a disappointing afternoon for the Sky Blues.
