A degree of positivity returned in the knowledge that our latest signing Omar Marmoush would start, and that Mohammed Kudus (absent injured since January) was on the bench. We were mystified by the idea of playing Pedro Porro in front of Archie Gray, and hindsight tells us that was not a success. The absence of Danso, Sarr and Richarlison from the bench was explained later in the day by Roberto de Zerbi's comment that all three "wanted to leave." We knew that Sarr was unhappy, and he is already being linked with Juventus. I am personally sad that Danso wants to go, because he has never let us down in my view. I suppose he realises he is behind Van Hecke, and Senesi in the centre-half pecking order. Without producing a killer touch, but playing some attractive football, Spurs were clearly the better team in the first half. Their build-up was slow at times, and the defence was leaving too much space at the back and not anticipating the movement of the Newcastle team. Newcastle scored with their only two shots on target in the second half, and last season's misery returned. We have not lost our first two games without scoring since August 1974. We actually lost our third game then without a goal in our favour, and we must hope we do not emulate that record next week at Forest. In 1974 those defeats were three of Bill Nicholson's last seven games in charge. We just escaped relegation at the end of that season. That must not happen again. This was a sentiment expressed in Vinai Venkatesham's letter to the fans in the match programme. All the money spent in this transfer window does not make a team yet. The players need to gel fast. Newcastle kicked off and played towards the south stand. Inside 40 seconds Elanga threatened goal with a cross from the right and the visitors had a corner. Micky van de Ven took an early yellow card when we were nearly caught on the hop by Wissa, chasing a long ball. One of Newcastle's summer signings Amar Dedic stole the ball off Tel (plenty of promise but no end product), leading to a move in which Wissa crossed, but Harvey Barnes fired well over the target. Tel excited with his move down the left, but his attempted pass inside was poor. If not dazzling us yet with his defensive ability, Jan Paul van Hecke gave us plenty of evidence today of his ability to pick out a good pass. He sent Marmoush away and the ball was sent to Tel, whose right-footed curler won us a corner. Marmoush had a shot blocked later after a Tel pass. The ball rebounded to Tonali, who fed Pedro Porro whose shot was deflected for another corner. Tonali was getting booed of course by the travelling fans and was cheered off by them when he was substituted in the second half. Pedro Porro had another shot blocked at the edge of the box after a good build-up from midfield. The same player fired wide after a corner from the left won by Tel. Newcastle won two successive corners before Andy Robertson hit a corner deep to the back post where Marmoush's shot hit the side netting. We had another corner after good play by Tel and Marmoush on the left. Marmoush crossed and Andy Robertson's shot was blocked before Micky van de Ven's effort won us another corner. Fernandes took the corner and van Hecke's header was saved. Referee Peter Bankes had found a foul by us anyway. Marmoush and Tonali raced forward before Marmoush passed to Pedro Porro, whose cross was cleared. Pedro Porro subsequently found Tel with a good pass, but Tel's cross passed the far post and went out of play. Pedro Porro had a shot blocked after a driving run by Tonali. More good play by Robertson and Tel led me to be hopeful about the second half. Spurs had a penalty shout early in the second half after Thiaw challenged Marmoush in the box, but Mr. Bankes was not interested and VAR no doubt agreed with him. Barnes knocked down a ball for Lewis Hall, but the left back was off target. Marmoush had a good run on the ball before feeding Tel, but the recipient wasted his chance. Robertson teed up Tel, but he gave us another poor effort on goal. Marmoush picked up the ball near halfway and ran forward before trying a shot from outside the area. This passed wide of Hornicek's right post. Newcastle's first goal was a little out of the blue. The ball was crossed from the right. Dedic nodded it down to Elanga, who turned and hit a shot that rebounded off the inside of the far post over the line. Tonali won a free kick which was taken by Tel and hit high over the target. Tel was one of three substitutions which saw Mikey Moore replace him on the left wing. Udogie took over from Robertson and Archie Gray's departure meant that Pedro Porro moved back while Kudus played on the right. Kudus saw plenty of the ball, but did not offer a killer cross or finish, although he did provide the pass from which a Pedro Porro shot was tipped over the bar. Fernandes shot after the corner was wide. Newcastle made two substitutions, one of which was Woltemade. He headed down a corner that came from the right and Wissa, with his back to goal, scored with an instinctive overhead kick, high to the left of Kinsky. It was a goal that killed Spurs hopes. For all their efforts, Spurs couldn't find a goal. Kinsky had to race out and clear from the feet of the advancing Barnes. In added time Udogie's cross was flicked goalward by Solanke (who had replaced Tonali) but cleared off the line. De Zerbi's team remains a work in progress. For the moment we are propping up the table. It turned into yet another depressing day. Follow @spursodyssey . Squad numbers, appearances, bookings & goalscorers . Read the preview for this game. .
