Coventry City are set to get one more deal over the line with the arrival of Stephen Mfuni but Frank Lampard has revealed that he doesn’t expect any more summer signings before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.
The 18-year-old defender is joining the Sky Blues on loan from Manchester City, offering additional cover at centre-back but expected to compete with Jay Dasilva for the left-back berth on a season-long arrangement.
Asked if he’ll be doing any more business before Tuesday night’s 11pm deadline, the City boss said: “No, I don’t think so in terms of what we have brought into the club and where we’re at. Um, who knows because there’s a few days.”
With a fairly large squad, however, following the arrival of nine new players on top of permanent deals for last season’s loan men Carl Rushworth and Frank Onyeka, there’s clearly scope for a number to leave.
Left-back Miguel Brau has already joined Portuguese top flight side Academico on a season-long loan while midfielder Kai Andrews has joined Oxford United, also on loan.
Ethan Pinnock’s arrival from Brentford last week takes the number of centre-halves to six, seven if you include Mfuni, which means one or two defenders could depart although the most obvious candidate, Luke Woolfenden, remains out with a knee injury for a number of “weeks”.
“Will some players leave?” Lampard said, “if it’s best for them and best for the club, then it’s possible.”
