The Magpies earned an impressive away win as Matthias Jaissle set the standards in his first away match
Yoane Wissa celebrates his goal against Spurs
Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle has insisted that the Magpies won't get carried away with their flying start - but urged his players to enjoy the moment after seeing off Spurs last night.
The 2-0 win lifted United into the Champions League places in the Premier League, but Jaissle was simply pleased his side chalked up three points on a day in which they kept their nerve in the capital. For more than an hour, Newcastle had struggled to produce a shot on target before Anthony Elanga broke the deadlock, and Yoane Wissa's overhead kick sealed the deal.
Newcastle publicised their post-game dressing room celebrations but Jaissle warned: "We have our own goals and we are clear with that. We are also realistic. Now you write everything is top, everything is great. We don't follow that too much. We are emotionally very stable and don't see the highs higher than it is now.
"It is a moment to enjoy as well after that start, but we are also smart enough to see a long journey ahead of us and there will be challenges as well."
"In the first half, we didn't play a really good game, but we could really count on everyone throwing everything into every ball and every cross. This is the commitment and belief that we can keep the clean sheet, so that makes me proud."
Yoane Wissa sums up the mood after exits
It is believed that Wissa has been one of the players to find his voice behind the scenes after a summer of upheaval.
After missing a couple of big chances in the first two matches of the campaign against West Brom and Liverpool, Wissa was under a little pressure to find the net against Spurs. And while he had to wait patiently for his opportunity, he proved to be clinical when it mattered.
On a day in which Tonali was booed, Wissa lifted the lid on the feeling behind the scenes to fill the void left behind by the departing trio. He said: "Of course we lost so many players but the club worked well.
"It is challenging and we need players to step up, like me for instance, I didn't play last yeat and now I have a chance to play. So many players have to step up and enjoy the challenge and with the fans behind us nobody can stop us."
Newcastle win first opening road trip for six years
You'd have to go back to the depressing Mike Ashley era for the last time Newcastle picked up three points in their first away game of the season.
Back then, Ashley stood up and applauded in an empty stadium during lockdown as goals from Jeff Hendrick and Callum Wilson earned an away win at West Ham. The win at Spurs was much more impressive, and it came in front of over 3,000 travelling fans, who provided a great atmosphere for the players to savour the win.
Hopefully, it will be the first of many records broken under Jaissle as he settles into the Toon hotseat after less than a month in charge.
