Nico González: 'I am really happy for the work I have done'

Nico Gonzalez is glad to have found his feet at Newcastle United.
The Spaniard set foot into English football at the start of 2025 when Manchester City were crying out for extra squad depth to manage their injury crisis. He helped the team to finish in 3rd place, but Rodri and Bernardo Silva would eventually establish themselves as first choice central midfielders.
The Citizens have since signed Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, so Gonzalez decided to move to St. James' Park in order to give himself the opportunity to have more playing time on the field.
A successful Premier League debut
His Premier League debut for the Toon was a success: a 2-0 win over Tottenham. His seniority and passing distribution are welcome in the group, and the player feels integrated in the dressing room.
"It was amazing. I have been four days here so it wasn't easy for me to start but I am really happy for the work I have done and the team has done.
'This group has so much potential'
"The idea [in the second half] was the same but we made a few adjustments and were a little more aggressive on them. I think that this group has so much potential, we are really young and have so much space to improve and even today I felt like we kept on improving and feeling more comfortable and that is the way we need to keep going.
"[The pass for the first goal] is something I spoke a lot about with the coach. He wants me to see these kind of balls and I tried a few in the first half and the second half and we scored. It is something we have tried to work on. In the second half we said, 'we have to keep doing this because it is really hard to defend these types of players. I hope it gives us many more goals this season."
