Coventry City have confirmed the signing of versatile defender Stephen Mfuni on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
The 18-year-old can play as a left-sided central defender or left-back but is most likely joining the Sky Blues to compete for the full-back berth with Jay Dasilva and Jake Bidwell.
It’s understood that the player, who earned glowing reviews during a brief loan spell at Watford in the Championship last season, will not be available to face his parent club when Frank Lampard’s men travel to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
“I feel blessed to be here, it’s exciting,” said Mfuni, speaking to the club’s media team.
“These are moments you dream of and to do it with such a good team and a good squad, I’m looking forward to it.
“I spoke to the gaffer, he wants me to show what I normally do on the pitch, whether I’m at left-back or centre-back, and for me to keep being me and do what I do.
“It feels good and feels like somewhere I can be at home. I’m looking forward to seeing the fans and for them to see why I’m here.”
Mfuni made his senior debut for the Citizens last season in the 10-1 victory over Exeter City in the Emirates FA Cup before gaining further experience on loan at Watford, where he made eight appearances during the second half of last season.
He’s also featured against EFL sides in the Vertu Trophy for City’s Under 21s and has also been named as a substitute for Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches.
The defender has progressed through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium and capped off his youth career by scoring in the FA Youth Cup final, which saw City lift the trophy after a 4-0 triumph over Leeds United in 2024.
He has also been recognised at international level and has represented England from Under 16s through to Under 19s and started all three matches at the 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
