Matthias Jaissle has got the [Newcastle United](https://readnewcastle.com/2026/08/30/newcastle-united-close-agreeing-e70-million-signing/) fans excited at the start of the season. A draw against Liverpool has been followed up by two wins.
Of course, Newcastle United were always expected to win against West Bromwich Albion in League Cup competition in midweek. But the true test came in an away game against Tottenham Hotspur.
Jaissle’s side passed with flying colours. Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa, two players who have looked reborn under the new manager, found the back of the net to secure a 2-0 away win against Tottenham Hotspur.
So, fans are now starting to look forward to the future. That is quite the turnaround after many had tipped Newcastle United as potential relegation contenders coming into the season.
As we look towards the future, it is also time to say goodbye to the past. The arrival of Jaissle has come with the departure of many who were part of the coaching structure while Eddie Howe was the manager.
Another such name has confirmed his move away from the club. Adam Bartlett has announced that he has left his role as Newcastle United’s head of goalkeeping.
He wrote on his [LinkedIn](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7498012955079413760/) profile regarding the exit after spending seven years at Newcastle United:
> After 7 fantastic years, I have now officially departed my role as head of goalkeeping at Newcastle United football club.
We can only wish him the best of luck in his journey in football and are eager to see where it all takes him next. He should be thanked for everything he provided the club in those seven years at St James’ Park, including his role in the League Cup win and multiple runs in the Champions League.
Newcastle United have a new set of goalkeepers in place this season. In many ways, it feels like a fresh start for the entire department.
Ewen Jaouen was brought in very early in the summer window but is the cover option for now. The step up from the French second division to the Premier League might have been seen as too much at once for the youngster.
Lukas Hornicek has been signed as the new number one. And the clean sheet against Tottenham Hotspur would have done his confidence a world of good as he pulled off five saves.
Remarkably, Nick Pope is still at the club despite being linked with a move away all summer. It remains to be seen if he can find a new home for himself before deadline day.
