Manchester United 5-2 Ipswich: Captain Fantastic Bruno Fernandes Leads United to First Victory

Bruno Fernandes hat-trick fires Manchester United to their first win of the Premier League season, with Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo also on the scoresheet at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s men welcomed Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town to Old Trafford looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat away to fellow newcomers defeat away to fellow newcomers Hull City. The hosts made four changes from that loss, with Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford coming into the starting XI for Rashford's first start for the Red Devils since his return.

Story of the Match

Manchester United created the first opportunity of the afternoon when Marcus Rashford’s delivery was headed away, but only as far as Dalot. The Portuguese defender cut inside onto his left foot before curling an effort towards the far corner, only for 6’9 goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen to produce an excellent save to deny him.

Ipswich immediately threatened on the counter from the resulting corner. Julio Enciso raced clear after beating Luke Shaw and Bryan Mbeumo in a footrace, but Senne Lammens stood tall to make a crucial one-on-one save and keep the visitors from taking an early lead.

The game continued to be played at an end-to-end pace, as Lief Davis’ defence-splitting pass sent Daizen Maeda through behind Dalot. The forward fired towards the far corner, but his effort was tipped wide of the post by Lammens.

Ipswich eventually made their pressure count just before the half-hour mark. Abdul Fatawu nutmegged Luke Shaw before driving towards the byline and cutting the ball back to Leif Davis. The left-back met the delivery with a first-time half-volley, striking it cleanly with the instep of his foot and firing the visitors into the lead.

The visitors nearly doubled their advantage with the same combination moments later. Fatawu’s inswinging delivery found Davis unmarked at the far post, but the left-back’s first-time volley was tipped over the crossbar by Lammens.

Manchester United were not behind for long, however, as Marcellino Núñez’s slip gifted the ball to Matheus Cunha, leaving the hosts with a three-on-one situation. Cunha showed excellent composure, sliding an inch-perfect pass into the path of Bruno Fernandes, who made no mistake, firing high into the near corner to level the score.

Five minutes into the second half, it looked certain that Mbeumo had put the Red Devils ahead. A deep cross found Rashford, whose volley back across goal fell perfectly into the path of the Cameroonian winger. However, Mbeumo could not keep his effort down, striking the ball against the crossbar from underneath it as Ipswich scrambled to clear the danger.

Maguire Breaks the Deadlock

As Manchester United continued to huff and puff in search of a breakthrough, it was Harry Maguire who provided the moment that finally broke down the Ipswich defence. The centre-back won possession on the edge of the box, with the visitors immediately appealing for a handball. Play continued, and Maguire’s effort towards goal took a decisive deflection off Jacob Greaves and nestled into the corner.

Ipswich’s protests over the handball continued, but the goal stood, with Greaves ultimately credited with the own goal to put United ahead.

Just minutes later, Mainoo’s pass through the heart of the Ipswich defence found Cunha, who was brought down by a last-ditch challenge from Greaves. It was a difficult couple of minutes for the Ipswich defender.

Captain Bruno Fernandes stepped up from the penalty spot, facing the tallest goalkeeper in Premier League history, and calmly sent Scherpen the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Manchester United continued to showcase their quality, with Dalot’s cross finding Rashford unmarked at the back post. The forward met it with a ferocious volley, but Scherpen was equal to it, producing another excellent save to deny him.

Fernandes then completed his hat-trick after a slick passing move opened up the Ipswich defence. The ball fell to Mbeumo, whose effort towards goal took a deflection off Davis and fell kindly into the path of Fernandes. The captain made no mistake, calmly rolling the ball into the corner to complete his hat-trick.

Fernandes nearly had a fourth moments later. After winning the ball back straight from the restart, he spotted Scherpen off his line and attempted an audacious effort from halfway. The towering Ipswich goalkeeper was forced to backpedal quickly, but managed to ensure the ball did not find its way over his head.

Michael Carrick made two changes with twenty minutes to go, replacing Dalot and Shaw with Yoro and Mazraoui. Everyone was trying to get in with the fun with Cunha, Rashford, and Bruno Fernandes all testing Scherpen in the Ipswich goal.

Andrey Santos, Benjamin Sesko, and Patrick Dorgu all joined the party, replacing Cunha, Mainoo, and Rashford with ten minutes to go, as fans called for the introduction of Shea Lacey.

Fernandes then turned provider, delicately chipping the ball over the Ipswich defence and into the path of Mbeumo, who had raced in behind. The winger’s looping effort struck the crossbar before just about bouncing over the line, with Greaves following up to smash the ball into the net anyway. The goal was ultimately credited to Mbeumo, putting United 5-1 ahead.

It was nearly six moments later when Dorgu met a Mbeumo cross at the back post, but Scherpen was equal to it, making another fine save to keep the scoreline from becoming even more emphatic.

The mood was dampened late on when Lisandro Martínez was dispossessed inside his own penalty area. The defender attempted a Cruyff turn but was caught out by Julio Enciso, who won possession before squaring the ball across to Chuba Akpom. With an empty net in front of him, Akpom made no mistake, finishing calmly to give Ipswich a late consolation.

Patrick Dorgu had another chance on the counter to make it six but opted to shoot at the near post, forcing a good save by Scherpen, but that was all at Old Trafford.

Manchester United now turn their attention to next week against next week against Everton as they look to continue the form they produced today.

Player of the Match: Bruno Fernandes

At half-time, it looked like this could become one of those games for Manchester United — much like the away trip to Hull. But in the second half, Bruno Fernandes produced a true captain’s performance.

Back at Old Trafford, Fernandes reminded everyone exactly why he was named PFA Player of the Year. Three goals, one assist, and a performance in which he completely ran the show.

His assist for Mbeumo’s goal was a perfect example of his quality. Fernandes didn’t even need to face the winger before finding him, showing the awareness and vision that have become such a defining part of his game. His goals, meanwhile, came with the instinct of a natural poacher.

From start to finish in the second half, Fernandes was a step above everyone else on the pitch. He dictated the tempo, created chances, found the decisive moments and ultimately won United the game. A captain’s performance when his team needed him most.
