Roberto De Zerbi press conference ahead of Tottenham vs Newcastle.mp4

Tottenham Hotspur Football Newsletter

Tottenham’s terrible start to the season continued on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat by Newcastle United.

However, there were no further blows for Roberto De Zerbi on the injury front.

Instead, there were welcome returns for Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Mohammed Kudus, while the Italian revealed post-match that Kevin Danso, Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr had all asked to leave the club before the deadline on Tuesday.

Sarr, according to his head coach, had also picked up a minor injury, but the Senegal international’s future in north London remains in doubt with reported interest from Juventus.

Here is all the latest Tottenham injury news and potential return dates...

Savio

The big omission from the Newcastle debacle was Savio.

The recent recruit from Manchester City was supposed to have made his full league debut since his £75million arrival, but instead, he was omitted from the matchday squad.

De Zerbi explained that the winger had suffered some muscular fatigue following his stunning goalscoring debut against Charlton in the Carabao Cup, and the Italian hoped that the Brazilian would be back for this week’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

Potential return date: Nottm Forest (A) on September 5, 2026

Missing: Savio

James Maddison

The midfielder has been ruled out of the last couple of matches with a shoulder fracture that he suffered against Brentford on the opening day, having recently recovered from a long-term ACL injury.

He was missing from the squad against both Charlton and Newcastle, but he could be back for the visit to the City Ground this week.

“James has not a big problem, but pain in his left shoulder,” De Zerbi said last week.

“He’s working. We have to find the right plan. We have to work consistently for three, four weeks, and then he's a different player.”

Potential return date: Nottm Forest (A) on September 5, 2026

Dejan Kulusevski

It has been a year and a half since the Sweden international last pulled on a Tottenham shirt, but the club have released footage of him back in training.

The forward has been struggling with several setbacks from his serious kneecap problem, with the north Londoners wanting to be cautious with his return to action.

De Zerbi said recently of Kulusevski: ““I hope, and I will be very, very happy to see Kulusevski in (the squad list), and I want to put him on the list because he is working very well, very hard.

“If he feels good like now, he’s improving day by day. It’s great watching him during the season and also because he deserves it. He suffered too much for his career for his age, for his level of human.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Xavi Simons

Dutch international Simons is unlikely to return to action until at least March or April next year after rupturing his ACL against Wolves before the end of last season.

The attacking midfielder has not featured at all since April, and he is still likely to be out for a further lengthy period.

Potential return date: March/April 2027

Long-term absentee: Xavi Simons

Wilson Odobert

Young forward Odobert also tore his ACL last term, and is working his way back to full fitness too.

The Frenchman is thought to be ahead of Simons in his recovery procedure, perhaps before the turn of the year.

Potential return date: Late 2026
