Jonathan David has landed in Spain to complete his loan move from Juventus to Atletico Madrid, and it is exactly what Juve had wanted throughout the summer.
The Canadian joined Juventus as a free agent at the start of last season, and the Bianconeri were convinced they had signed one of the top players in world football.
David was expected to replicate the goalscoring form he showed at Lille in Turin, but his first season at the club was a write off, as he struggled to perform for the Bianconeri.
He does not appear to be a natural fit for the way Juventus want to play, and the club’s current manager is convinced he cannot use the striker as effectively as he would like.
With that in mind, Juve asked David to find a new club. It took some time for an opportunity he wanted to emerge, but he has now secured his move to Spain and will have the chance to prove that he remains a top striker.
David gets Atletico opportunity
David now has an opportunity to revive his career at Atletico Madrid and show that his struggles in Turin do not reflect his true ability.
The Canadian will hope to rediscover the form that made him such a highly regarded forward at Lille. His spell in Spain will also give him the chance to work under Diego Simeone, who has a reputation for helping players regain their confidence.
Orlando assesses Juventus spell
Massimo Orlando has discussed David’s time in Turin and believes the striker could benefit from his move to Atletico.
He said via Tuttojuve:
“David? The hope is to see him again like he was at Lille. He didn’t fit in at Juve, he was criticized. I don’t think he’s a phenomenon, but neither is the one seen at Juve. He’s going to Atletico with Simeone, who’s good at regenerating players. Now he’s scared and it’s right that he leaves.”
David will now look to put his disappointing Juventus spell behind him and make a strong impression in Spain. Atletico Madrid provides him with a fresh opportunity, while Juventus can move forward after finally resolving the situation surrounding their striker.
The Canadian has plenty to prove, and his performances at Atletico will determine whether he can rediscover the level he showed before joining Juventus.
