Newcastle United: Woltemade “Happy” With Juve Loan
Nick Woltemade has spoken about his season-long loan to Juventus – but the move has been criticised by former Newcastle United player Dietmar Hamann.
The 24-year-old forward moved to Juve on transfer deadline day. The loan will cost the Italian giants £3.5m, but there is no obligation to buy Woltemade when it expires.
Woltemade joined Newcastle on transfer deadline day last year in a £64m move from Stuttgart.
Woltemade: “I’m Really, Really Happy”
There was optimism when Woltemade joined Newcastle, especially after the start he made, scoring four goals in his first five Premier League games.
However, it became clear that he didn’t fit then-head coach Eddie Howe’s system, and Howe moved Woltemade into midfield as he tried to find a solution.
It was hoped that Matthias Jaissle could solve the problem, but Woltemade’s face didn’t fit there, either. The arrival of Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille hastened the German’s exit.
Speaking to Juve’s website, Woltemade said (via The Shields Gazette): “Of course, I’m really, really happy to be here. It’s a big club.
“I’m excited for this new adventure, [to live in] another new country and play at the biggest club in Italy.”
Woltemade also spoke about what he offers his new club.
“Last year, I changed to England. I can take a lot with me physical-wise and also smartness in the game.
“The most important of my best qualities is my technique and understanding for the game. I’m a smart player and yeah, I can score goals.
“I can help the team to win, and of course I want to do it. A lot of control, a lot of time on the ball and, in these situations, the best things come out of me.”
Hamann: “I Don’t Really Like the Move”
Former Newcastle and Germany midfielder Hamann has a different view. He believes that a move back to Germany would have been better for Woltemade.
He told Sky Germany (via The Shields Gazette): “I was surprised when I read it. I think he would have fitted in at [Borussia] Dortmund.
“In Italy, Milan have been where the action has been in recent years. Juventus do not play in the Champions League.
“I would have preferred to see him move to BVB. I don’t really like the move.”
