The Italian media have mixed opinions regarding whether AC Milan’s goal against Juventus could have been chalked off for a foul in the build-up.
Just eight minutes after coming off the bench, Alphadjo Cisse made the perfect impact as he scored his second goal of the season to break the deadlock, after his first goal for the club came in the same city against Torino.

Milan won the ball back off Randal Kolo Muani and the move ended with Samuel Chukwueze crossing to Cisse, who brought it down, cut in and shot. However, there were some protests about a possible foul on Kolo Muani by De Winter, ones that didn’t seem very strong.
Media disagree on De Winter non-call
Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) took the following view on the incident: “Of course, the incident of the evening was Milan’s recovery of the ball for the goal that broke the deadlock: De Winter tackled Kolo Muani, looking for the ball, but didn’t get it.
“Replays show that De Winter’s backheel slammed into the toe of the French Juventus striker, the move continued, and Cissè scored. Mariani validated the move, and VAR approved it, taking a heavy toll on himself.
“The contact was clear and it was there, it wasn’t a full step-on, but the challenge was still negligent and therefore a foul. It’s possible that, given that the match was just outside Milan’s half, far from the goal, the refereeing team decided to ignore it.”
La Gazzetta dello Sport: “In the 68th minute, Cisse scored for Milan: at the start of the move, De Winter back-heeled Kolo Muani’s right foot. Mariani deemed it legal, but it looked like a foul even with this high penalty threshold. VAR didn’t intervene.”
Tuttosport said: “In the 23rd minute [of the second half] came the incident. That was, in fact, the minute Cisse scored, but he finished off a move that stemmed from a foul by De Winter on Kolo Muani: the defender stomped the ball but it didn’t touch it, which Modric recovered and started the move that led to the goal.
“The goal, however, should have been disallowed: or at least that’s the way it’s always been since VAR was introduced, which, however, as Orsato announced, is less ‘interventionist’ this year. In this case, it leaves some doubts. ”
Former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese commented on Instagram on the goal awarded to AC Milan despite early contact between De Winter and Kolo Muani.

“First, one thing is certain: the contact was in APP [attacking phase of play], and therefore, if it had been deemed a foul, Cisse’s goal would have been disallowed. Therefore, the distance from the goal had nothing to do with it.
“However, by cross-referencing the two cameras at our disposal and observing the reconstruction with our CalvarTech, we see that in reality there was no actual foul contact: it was more of a pinch between De Winter’s heel and the toe of Kolo Muani’s boot. And we know well that the new guidelines rightly tend to overlook this type of marginal contact.
“For this reason, in my opinion, the decision to let play continue was correct and is consistent with UEFA guidelines and, above all, with the refereeing threshold we have seen applied in Serie A since the start of the season.”
