Manchester United explored several options to add depth at left-back during the summer transfer window, but the club ultimately chose to leave the position unchanged. Despite their interest in strengthening the area, United were unwilling to make a permanent signing that could affect their plans for future windows.
Lewis Hall was the standout target, and United discussed a potential move with Newcastle United. However, Newcastle made it clear that they had no intention of selling the defender. Hall is still understood to be United's preferred option, and the club could return for him when the transfer window reopens next summer.
Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas was another player considered, with the defender available for a reported £13.7 million due to his release clause. United opted against activating the clause and instead looked into the possibility of bringing in a left-back on loan.
One alternative was Alejandro Balde of Barcelona, with United reportedly discussing the possibility with his representative, Jorge Mendes. Barcelona were not interested in a loan arrangement, while Balde was also keen to remain at Camp Nou. With the options limited, United decided to wait rather than commit to a deal that could complicate their pursuit of Hall next summer.

A move for Lewis Hall was always going to be extremely difficult over the summer, with United using most of their summer budget on the midfield, while Newcastle also sold several key players, meaning they were unwilling to budge on their stance about keeping Hall at the club.
As reported by Football Insider, Manchester United decided against making the move for Hall, as they felt his arrival could have created issues behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Speaking to the outlet, former Premier League chief scout Mick Brown said, "There was a lot of talk about Man United signing a left-back, but I don't think it was urgent.
"I understand they have been looking long-term about who they will bring in to replace Shaw, and I can see why Lewis Hall is the outstanding candidate in that respect.
"But when I say long-term, I mean it's something I would expect to see next summer or even beyond that, I'm not convinced it was something they were pushing for this summer.
"I've heard they pulled the plug on that, because if he was at Old Trafford next week, either him or Shaw are going to be disappointed because they're not in the team.
"So then over the course of the season, you end up with at least one unhappy player, and that can become a big concern down the line.
"Ultimately, it would cause more problems than it's worth at this stage, because they're pretty happy going into the season with Shaw still the first choice in that position.
"Newcastle weren't going to be easy to buy from either, because of the other players they'd lost, so the value wasn't really there for Hall, but that could change in a year's time."

Manchester United's transfer business has focused on adding key depth to one position each summer, as seen by the club signing a new forward line in the summer of 2025, and the midfield rebuild last summer.
However, the opportunity to sign Lewis Hall over the summer should have been one that United made the most of, despite the high price tag that a player of his quality would have demanded.
Now, the 21-year is seemingly committing his long-term future to Newcastle, with reports indicating that he is set to sign a two-year contract extension to his contract that runs until 2029.
Judging by the club's recent transfer strategy, expect United to go back in for Hall next summer, but, while it remains to be seen if Hall's new deal will include a release clause, expect Newcastle to be demanding a similar amount that they did last summer, if not more, considering other clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City were reportedly interested in Hall aswell.
