Manchester United attempted to strengthen their left-back options in the summer, but will now have to wait until the January transfer window.

Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on Borussia Dortmund left-back Daniel Svensson as planning starts for the January transfer window. United were keen to strengthen the position in the summer, but were unable to do so.
They are therefore likely to revisit the situation when the transfer window re-opens in the new year, with Luke Shaw currently the only natural left-back in the squad. While the England international played every one of United’s league games last season, the addition of Champions League football could have an impact.
German outlet Fussballdaten reports that United are one of four top clubs closely monitoring the development of Svensson. The 24-year-old is in his second season with Dortmund and has started every game so far this campaign, playing at centre-back, left midfield, left-back and right midfield.
His versatility to play in several different positions is said to be attracting clubs. Arsenal, AC Milan and Juventus are the other clubs reported to be showing an interest.
Dortmund are said to see the Sweden international as a valuable member of the squad, with a fee of around €35-40 million (£30-39m) named for the club to even enter into talks.
United identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as the leading target in their search for a left-back in the final weeks of the summer transfer window. However, it ultimately became clear that the Magpies would not be willing to let another key player leave the club following the exits of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Hall has played the full 90 minutes of all four of Newcastle’s games so far this season, providing an assist in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth.
There are some reports in the North East that he is closing in on an agreement over a new contract with the club.
The 21-year-old’s current deal runs until 2019. Any new deal would significantly strengthen Newcastle's standing in potential transfer negotiations.
There was also interest from United in Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly, but he was keen to stay at his boyhood club. The 19-year-old has started all of Arsenal’s four games this season in a defensive midfield position.
