If there is one player who Man Utd were linked with all summer but were not able to sign, it is Lewis Hall. Ultimately, Man Utd did not sign a left-back at all. Instead, they are continuing with the veteran option, Luke Shaw, as their number one option in that area of the pitch. That cannot be the long-term plan, though.
In the long run, Man Utd do need to sign a quality left-back. And it is not hard to see why Hall might be their top pick to take that spot at Old Trafford.
That being said, Newcastle United have sent a clear message about Hall’s future. The left-back is believed to be on the verge of signing an extension with the club that runs until 2031. And it has been suggested that the Magpies have no plans of letting him leave any time soon.
On the other hand, it looks like Man Utd have made a bold decision as well when it comes to strengthening their left-back position in the future.
It is believed that Manchester United had tried to sign a left-back late in the summer transfer window. So, conventional wisdom would suggest that they would try again immediately in January. But that does not seem to be the case.

Now, will Man Utd still try to sign Hall? Will they go after somebody else? That remains to be seen, but it appears that the club are ready to take their time with the move, whatever it turns out to be.
The fact of the matter is that a lot can change in football within a short span of time. Right now, Hall seems to be closing in on a long-term extension with Newcastle United.
That would suggest that he sees a future for himself at the club. But at the same time, a lot might end up depending on how Newcastle United perform this season.
If this ends up being another disappointing campaign, then Hall might decide that the time has come to part ways by the time the next summer transfer window comes around.
In many ways, that would be understandable. If Newcastle United want to keep their best players, they will need to produce results on the pitch, compete in the biggest competitions, and win silverware. Otherwise, exits are inevitable.
