Christopher Nkunku has turned down a late transfer offer from Man United, as per latest transfer news. He chose to head back to RB Leipzig on loan instead. The move has left fans asking why a player once linked with the Premier League‘s biggest names chose to step away from it entirely.
Why Christopher Nkunku Said No To Man Utd?
As reported by BILD, Christopher Nkunku had two Premier League clubs chasing him in the final days of the summer window. Newcastle United reportedly made contact with AC Milan, while Man Utd also pushed hard to bring him to Old Trafford. Despite both clubs showing real interest, Nkunku made it clear that Leipzig was his only choice.
Leipzig’s sporting director, Marcel Schafer, later confirmed just how firm the player’s stance was. Speaking about the deal, he said, “***The transfer wouldn’t have happened without Christo’s steadfastness. Two Premier League clubs were willing to go to great lengths, we wouldn’t have stood a chance.***”
This is a rare thing to see as Premier League football offers a bigger paycheck and more attention. But Nkunku’s decision suggests he wanted comfort and familiarity over a new challenge.
Nkunku’s tough spell since leaving Germany
Nkunku’s move away from Leipzig in 2023 was meant to be the next big step in his career. Chelsea paid a large fee to sign him, but things never really clicked in London. But he managed just 18 goals in 62 appearances for the Blues in all competitions. His problems did not end after leaving Chelsea.
The winger joined AC Milan in the summer of 2025, hoping Serie A would help him rediscover his best form. He scored 8 goals in 35 appearances for the Rossoneri across all competitions. When Ruben Amorim took charge at Milan this summer, Nkunku found himself pushed further down the line. It eventually opened the door for his return to Germany.

Will Nkunku regain his best form at Leipzig?
For RB Leipzig, this deal feels like a reunion built on trust. Nkunku spent four seasons at the club after joining from PSG in 2019. During that spell he became one of the most feared attackers in the Bundesliga. The club have structured the move as a season-long loan with an option to buy worth €28 million next year. This gives both sides a clear path forward if things go well.
For Man Utd, missing out on Nkunku is unlikely to cause panic. The club already has attacking options in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Benjamin Sesko. In addition, Marcus Rashford also returned from his loan spell at Barcelona. Even so, the fact that a player once heavily linked with a PL return chose to avoid it altogether will raise questions about how attractive Old Trafford currently looks to top attacking talent.
